AC Sets October and November Testing Dates for Fire Academy Applicants
Amarillo College will administer physical ability testing for anyone seeking admission to the AC Fire Academy at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 8 at the First Responders Academy (FRA) on Plains Boulevard.
Passing the physical ability test—which consists of simulated fire-scene activities—is among the requirements for admission to the Fire Academy. Signing up for physical testing is helpful, but not required. Participants may also walk in on either date.
“This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring firefighters to train in top-notch facilities and gain the skills needed for a successful career in firefighting,” said Steve Malley, AC Fire Academy coordinator.
On the day of the tests, Amarillo College advisers will be on-site to help students apply for the Fire Academy. The next AC Fire Academy will begin in January, offering both traditional weekday classes and a hybrid option with online and weekend sessions at FRA.
Upon completing the Fire Academy and passing certification exams, students will be eligible to work for fire departments anywhere in the state or country.
“Many of our graduates have secured positions with esteemed area fire departments,” Malley said.
Amarillo College Fire Academy graduates currently serve in departments across the region, including Amarillo, Borger, Cactus, Canyon, Clovis, Dumas, Lubbock, Pampa, Potter County, Randall County, and Pantex.
Malley added that many students qualify for financial assistance that covers a significant portion of tuition and other expenses.
“We encourage individuals aged 17 and up—both females and males—to apply and take the first step toward a rewarding career in firefighting,” he said.
