Amarillo College Automotive Expert Shares Winter Vehicle Safety Tips
As temperatures drop across the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo College is reminding community members to take simple, proactive steps to winterize their vehicles and avoid dangerous roadside breakdowns.
Rob Leuthen, AC Automotive/Diesel/Auto Body Coordinator at Amarillo College, emphasized that early preparation is key to staying safe during the cold months.
“Winterizing your vehicle is one of the most important things you can do to ensure reliability and protect yourself in harsh weather,” Leuthen said. “No one wants to be stranded in sub-freezing temperatures, and most winter prep steps are quick, inexpensive, and can prevent major problems.”
Leuthen recommends the following essential checks:
• Tires:
Verify correct air pressure, which fluctuates with temperature changes. Make sure tire tread depth is at least 3/32 of an inch for safe traction on icy or snowy roads.
• Fluids:
Confirm that all fluid levels are full and in good condition, including windshield washer fluid—critical for maintaining visibility in winter weather.
• Wiper Blades:
Replace blades every spring and fall to ensure effectiveness during snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
• Lights:
Conduct a full walk-around to check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. Proper visibility protects everyone on the road.
• Battery:
Most drivers don’t have the tools to test battery health, but batteries generally last about three years. Many auto parts stores offer free battery testing if you’re unsure about yours.
• Fuel:
Keep your tank at least half full to avoid condensation buildup and to ensure you can run your heater if you become stranded.
• Emergency Preparedness:
Carry blankets and water in your vehicle. In an emergency, these essentials can keep you warm and safe while you wait for help.
“Preparing now can save you from dangerous situations later,” Leuthen added. “Winter driving conditions can be unpredictable, but taking these steps greatly improves your safety.”
