Amarillo College Fire Academy to Host Physical Ability Testing and Practice Sessions
Amarillo College will administer physical ability testing for individuals seeking admission to the AC Fire Academy at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 11, and Saturday, July 18, at the First Responders Academy (FRA).
Completing the physical ability test, which consists of simulated fire-scene activities, is among the requirements for admission to the Fire Academy.
"This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring firefighters to train in top-notch facilities and gain the skills needed for a successful career in firefighting," said Steve Malley, AC Fire Academy coordinator.
To help applicants prepare, the Fire Academy will offer practice sessions at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 27, and 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at FRA. Participants are encouraged to wear athletic clothing suitable for physical fitness.
"These practice sessions will give you a good idea of what to expect during the actual test," Malley said.
While registration is encouraged, walk-ins are welcome for both practice sessions and testing days.
On testing days, Amarillo College advisers will be on site to assist prospective students with the Fire Academy application process. Upon completing the Fire Academy and passing certification exams, graduates are eligible to pursue firefighting careers throughout Texas and across the country.
"Many of our graduates have secured positions with esteemed area fire departments," Malley said.
AC Fire Academy graduates currently serve with the Amarillo Fire Department, Borger Fire Department, Cactus Fire Department, Canyon Fire Department, Clovis Fire Department, Dumas Fire Department, Lubbock Fire Department, Pampa Fire Department, Potter County Fire Department, Randall County Fire Department and Pantex Fire Department.
The Amarillo College Fire Academy offers both traditional and hybrid options. Traditional classes meet from 6:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at FRA. Hybrid students complete coursework online while attending several in-person weekend sessions at FRA.
Fall classes begin Aug. 24 and run through mid-December.
Many students qualify for financial assistance that covers a significant portion of tuition and related expenses.
"We encourage individuals ages 17 and older, both women and men, to apply and take the first step toward a rewarding career in firefighting," Malley said.
