Fire Academy to host physical ability testing at First Responders Academy

Amarillo College will administer physical ability testing for anyone seeking admission to the AC Fire Academy at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 26 and Saturday, Aug. 2 at the First Responders Academy (FRA) at Plains Boulevard.

Passing the physical ability test, which consists of simulated fire-scene activities, is among the requirements for admission to the Fire Academy.

“This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring firefighters to train in top-notch facilities and gain the skills needed for a successful career in firefighting,” said Steve Malley, AC Fire Academy coordinator.

There will also be practice tests at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 9 and Saturday, July 12 at FRA. Athletic gear appropriate for the weather is suggested for both events.

“These initial practices, will give you a good idea what to expect during the actual test a few weeks later,” Malley said.

On the day of the actual tests, Amarillo College advisers will be on site to help students apply for the Fire Academy. Upon completing the Fire Academy and passing the certification exams, students will be eligible to work anywhere in the state or country.

“Many of our graduates have secured positions with esteemed area fire departments,” Malley said.

AC has graduates working for the Amarillo Fire Department, Borger Fire Department, Cactus Fire Department, Canyon Fire Department, Clovis Fire Department, Dumas Fire Department, Lubbock Fire Department, Pampa Fire Department, Potter County Fire Department, Randall County Fire Department and Pantex Fire Department.

The fall AC Fire Academy traditional classes and the hybrid classes begin Aug. 25. The traditional classes meet 6:45 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at FRA. The hybrid classes meet online and several in-person weekend sessions at FRA.

Both academies are scheduled to conclude in mid-December 2025. Malley said many students can qualify for financial assistance that covers a significant portion of tuition and other expenses.

“We encourage individuals aged 17 and up, both females and males, to apply and take the first step toward a rewarding career in firefighting,” he said.
