Texas Mutual awards $100K to AC’s Safety Courses
Texas Mutual Insurance Company is awarding a $100,000 grant to Amarillo College (AC) to continue funding AC’s Safety and Environmental Technology program, which provides workplace safety and health courses for community employers, employees and the general public.
This is the 10th consecutive year that Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has given a grant to the college to support its risk management program.
"We are extremely proud that Texas Mutual recognizes the value of our safety training efforts and has renewed this generous funding for another year," said Dr. Jamelle Conner, president of Amarillo College. "This grant will change lives for those who take the classes as well as the businesses and employees Amarillo College supports throughout the region we serve."
Amarillo College launched its risk management program in 2016 to provide training for increased safety awareness and to reduce work-related accidents and injuries. In 2024, the college provided safety training classes to more than 700 students.
The risk management program offers a wide range of courses relative to Amarillo’s workforce. Support from Texas Mutual has allowed for an expansion of course offerings ranging from mental health and first aid/CPR to OSHA courses, confined space entry and awareness, and boom lift/scissor lift training. The college has now added courses in Spanish, including OSHA 10 and 30, first aid/CPR/AED and fire extinguisher training.
"Texas Mutual recognizes the essential contribution made by Texas community college partners in educating local workforces and helping to further our mission to build a stronger, safer Texas," said Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual. "For more than two decades, our dedication to these colleges and their communities has been demonstrated through grant funding. The ongoing education of Texas employees is something we are immensely proud to invest in and support.”
