Women to take part in exploration of technical careers at AC’s East Campus

More than 125 women who want to learn about technical-career opportunities long associated with the male gender will get that chance on Wednesday, March 19 when Amarillo College hosts “Women in Industry” on the East Campus.

The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and participants will engage in career exploration and seminars relevant to the pursuit of technical careers.

AC programs to be highlighted include aviation, welding, construction, automotive and diesel technology, fire technology, emergency medical services (for example, EMT), law enforcement, auto collision, truck driving, machining, and industrial technology.

Additionally, women representing industry partners and affiliates such as Pantex, Panhandle Community Centers, City Machine, and Amarillo Gear will provide insights about their respective industries and, specifically, their experiences as women in industry.

“This is an ideal opportunity to provide a broad exposure to in-demand often high earning careers, traditionally not sought by women,” said Ryan Francis, AC’s Perkins Grant Activities Coordinator.

“Attendees get to see our East Campus, home of the industry trades, and have an opportunity to meet and hear from an inspiring keynote and a panel of women that have pursued and found success in the trades through our courses. There is a legacy of success here, and our doors are open,” he said.

Attendees at AC’s “Women in Industry” event will have a chance to get their hands dirty at each of the career-specific stations on their tour of the East Campus.

The day’s activities begin with registration at the East Campus student services building. A welcome followed by tours begins at 9:20 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Lunch and a panel discussion featuring the guests from industry will be from 12:15-1 p.m., followed by a hands-on demonstration activity.

Participants will need to have transportation to move between buildings for the tour and will need to be equipped with closed-toed shoes and jeans. Registration for the event is closed as it reached capacity earlier this month.
