Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) The MyMathLab Access code provides access to an electronic version of the textbook and a variety of training tools, as well as access to homework, quizzes, and exams. Access to MyMathLab is required.

The physical textbook (ISBN: 9780321955050) is NOT required and is NOT available at the AC Bookstore. Electronic access to this textbook is available through MyMathLab.

The website, www.typing.com, will be used to learn, practice, and test skills using the keyboard's numeric keypad (10-key). Access to the website is free and you will be assigned a username and password to utilize needed materials.

Student Performance

The student will utilize basic math skills; apply basic math skills to solve business application problems using an electronic calculator/keyboard; and develop speed and accuracy using the keyboard's 10-key numeric pad. Topics include:

1. Whole numbers: define; round/front-end round; estimate; add, subtract, multiply, divide
2. Decimal numbers: read/write; round; estimate; add, subtract, multiply, divide
3. Fractions: convert back and forth between improper fractions and mixed numbers; write in lowest terms; least common denominator; rewrite with common denominator; add, subtract, multiply, divide
4. Percents: write decimals/fractions as percents; find part, base rate; calculate sales tax, return on investments; increase/decrease problems
5. Convert back and forth between decimals, fractions, and percents
6. Equations and Formulas: rules to solve equations; combine like terms; distributive property; simplify equations; solve for variables; ratios and proportions
7. Payroll: gross earnings; regular vs overtime vs double-time pay; FICA, medicare, and other taxes; income tax withholding
8. Purchasing: invoices; shipping terms; trade, series, and cash discounts
9. Sales: markup on cost; markup on selling price; markdowns; turnover and inventory valuation
10. Simple interest: finding principal, rate, and time; simple discount notes; discounting before maturity
11. Compound interest: interest-bearing bank accounts; inflation; present value; future value
12. Depreciation: straight-line method; declining-balance method; sum-of-the-years/digits method; units-of-production method; modified accelerated cost recovery system

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work. All work in this course is to be completed by the individual student and no work may be shared, copied, or the result of unauthorized collaboration with another person.

Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, using the work product of another person, and/or dishonesty may receive a 0 on an assignment; may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College.

The Faculty of the Office Administration Program reserve the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test or assignment by reproducing any specific section or the entire test/assignment in question.

Any action that compromises the computer systems at Amarillo College, including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of "F" in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Course grades will be assigned based upon the following criteria:

> 89.5 = A
>79.5 = B
>69.5 = C
>59.5 = D
<59.5 = F
 

Student evaluation is based upon the following assignments and weights:

Homework Assignments: 30%
Chapter Quizzes: 35%
10-Key Assignments : 15%
Final Exam: 20%

 

Assignments and quizzes are due each week by 10:00 pm on Mondays during Weeks 1-7; all work must be completed by 5:00 pm on Thursday (3/8) during Week 8.

Late work will be assessed a 10% penalty. Please review the course checklist posted in Blackboard and mark all due dates on a calendar to ensure nothing is missed.

Completing homework is an important part of this course. Homework provides practice on the concepts and principles presented in the chapters and ensures adequate preparation for quizzes and the final exam.

Quizzes are completed online in MyMathLab and are time-limited to 120-minutes. Each quiz has 20 questions and will automatically submit when the time limit is reached.

Once a quiz or exam has begun, it must be completed in one sitting; it cannot be saved and accessed later.

Attendance

Since this is an online course, attendance is gauged by completion of assignments.

Time management is vital to success in an online course. Although assignments are due on Sundays, it is recommended that learning course material and completing assignments be spread over multiple days throughout the week.

Consult the assignment checklist posted in Blackboard for due dates. A 10% penalty will be assessed when work is completed after the due date.
