Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

Students enrolled in an educational program in preparation for obtaining certain occupational licenses are potentially ineligible for such license if the student has been convicted of an offense. For further information, please contact your advisor, the Legal Clinic, or the faculty member in charge of the educational program that you seek to enroll in. The further information you will receive will include notification to you of your right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the licensing authority in order to clarify your particular situation.

1. Learn technical terminology, facts, theories and principals associated with the various dental specialties.
2. Apply knowledge learned in class to a dental office setting.
3. Evaluate the learning experience from the perspective of the specific course objectives.
Objectives
1. Learn patient behaviors from various case studies presented by guest speakers and classmates
2. Prepare a case study involving actual patient radiographs, photographs, study models, treatment notes and patient history.
3. Compare different case study results in regards to patient socioeconomic status, patient needs, patient perception of their needs and overall patient health
4. Maintain strict patient confidentiality in all presentations and discusssions

The student is being guided to be a dental healthcare team member and as such, will learn the traits a skilled team member must have in order to acheive success. These traits include; punctuality, respect, attitude, character, teamwork, productivity and dress and grooming. The student will be expected to follow all OSHA, CDC, Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and other government agency mandates. We realize the student is not familiar with such structure therefore, the student will first recieve two correctional warnings. The first will be verbal, the second will be written. On the third infraction of the same type offense, points will be deducted from the students grade. Every attempt possible is made by the staff and faculty of this course to help the student to succeed in the dental profession

The final course grade will be calculated as follows:
The student will present one major case study and participate in classmate case studies. The student will prepare for the case study by participating in a group case study and the student will also critique a classmates case study. The student will be expected to write a short paper following all guest lectures.
Group case study 15%

The following grading scale will be used for all Dental Assisting courses:
A = 93 to 100
B = 83 to 92
C = 75 to 82
F = Below 75
STUDENTS WILL BE PRESENTING ACTUAL CASES PERFORMED BY LOCAL AND AREA DENTISTS. CONFIDENTIALITY WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. ANY STUDENT BREAKING CONFIDENTIALITY WILL BE REPRIMANDED AND POSSIBLY FAILED FROM THE COURSE.
STUDENTS WILL SIGN A STATEMENT OF CONFIDENTIALITY FORM BEFORE BEGINNING THE CASE PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT
The student will be expected to participate in class during classmate presentations. Attendance is mandatory for all students regardless of their individual presentation date. All guest lecture papers will be due the following week after the presentation. Each paper will include the full name of the presenter, the nature of the case presentation and any other special information the guest speaker presents. All papers will be composed on a computer, using Calibri or Times font in size 12 or very similar, double spaced and at least one full page in length. SPELLING will count, with a one point deduction for each incorrect word.
Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement of the Dental Assisting Program. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Due to the amount of information contained in the course work, the student who plans to succeed should attend all lectures, labs, and clinical sessions regularly and promptly. The student will need to come to class on time, fully prepared for that session, with the necessary materials.
There is no distinction between an excused or unexcused absence. In each course, you may have up to TWO absences without it affecting your final grade. On the third absence, the final grade for the course will be reduced by 2 points. On the fourth absence, the final grade for the course will be reduced by 4 points. On the fifth absence, the overall grade will be reduced by 10 points. On the sixth absence, the student will be required to repeat the course. Attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each session. If the student is not present when attendance is taken the student is counted absent. Two bonus points will be added to the final grade for perfect attendance.
