Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisite: Audition or instructor consent

Course Description

One 30-minute lesson per week, minimum three hours of outside practice per week required. For music majors, in their minor area of performance. Emphasis on development of technique, musicianship and repertoire; performance opportunities in student recitals.

Student Performance

This course is the third of four semesters of study as a piano major, for students who have completed MUAP 1271, MUAP 1272, and have been passed by the music faculty into sophomore level instruction, based upon jury performances.

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

1. Play at least five technical studies by Hanon, Czerny, or other composers.

2. Play all major and minor scales, in 2, 3, and 4, octaves, sixteenth notes, minimum tempo quarter note = 90.

3. Perform at least 4 works chosen from the piano repertoire representing various styles, touches, tempi, and periods, from memory, demonstrating a growing awareness of musical expression. Representative works of literature would include, but not be limited to:

Bach - Two and Three Part Inventions, Prelude and Fugue from Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 or 2

Mozart - Sonatas

Beethoven - Sonatas

Chopin - Nocturnes, Polonaises, or Waltzes

Schumann - Fantasy Pieces

Brahms - Intermezzi

Rachmaninoff - Preludes

Debussy - Preludes

Bartok - Suite, Mikrokosmos Vol VI

Prokofiev - Visions Fugitive, Sarcasms, or other work

Gershwin - Preludes

The student will show a continuous, steady improvement in the mastery of technical and musical skills at the piano. Various technical problems will be addressed according to the individual needs of the student. Repertoire from the major periods of music will be studied. By the end of the semester the student will be able to play various technical exercises, and at least four major pieces from the piano repertoire, from memory, as a final examination.

Expected Student Behavior

Each student is expected to practice a minimum of 10 to 15 hours per week, divided evenly among the days of the week.

Grading Criteria

Each weekly lesson will be graded, according to improvement and effort shown on weekly assignments. Students are expected to practice for 10 to 15 hours per week, divided evenly among the days of the week. Weekly grades will be based on the following criteria:

A Entire assignment learned and presented in a polished manner

B Assignment learned, with a few problems

C Assignment attempted, with many difficulties

D Poorly prepared lesson, with little outside practice demonstrated

F Very poorly prepared lesson, with no outside practice demonstrated; or absent from lesson without prior notification (one unexcused absence is allowed)

The student must contact the instructor prior to the scheduled lesson time to set up a makeup lesson time, at the instructor's discretion.

A final playing exam, consisting of at least 3 prepared and memorized pieces learned throughout the semester, as well as representative scales from the semester of study, will be performed for the entire music faculty as a "music jury".  This performance will receive a composite letter grade.

The final grade for the course will be determined by averaging all weekly grades, which will be worth 75% of the total grade, and the jury grade, worth 25% of the final grade.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. One unexcused absence will be allowed, without affecting final grade. The second unexcused absence will be recorded as an "F" in the gradebook. Three unexcused absences will result in an "F" for the final grade.

Calendar

The student should contact the instructor prior to the first week of the semester to determine the time for the weekly lesson.  

 

Lessons will begin either during the first week of school, or during the second week of school if not scheduled prior to lesson time during the first week.

First lesson:     Meet with instructor; determine individual goals for semester, choose textbook/music, and receive first practice assignment.

2nd lesson:       Prepare the given assignment, and bring all required materials to lesson.

3rd and subsequent lessons:   Each upcoming week’s assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week’s lesson.

13th week of school:  All music for the jury examination must be memorized.

Monday of final exams week:  Individual music jury will be performed for the entire music faculty, in the Concert Hall.  Sign-up for time slots of 10 minutes per student will begin during the 14th week of school, in the Music Department Office.

Additional Information

Practice pianos are available:

Piano lab, Room 203:12 electronic pianos with headphones, available when room is not being used for classes.

 

Practice Rooms:  located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice.
