Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) One hour seminar per week on topics of importance to the musician, including student recitals, guest artist speakers and music careers.

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Student Performance

The primary objective of this course
is to help students fulfill music department requirements for recital and concert
attendance. The secondary objective is to strengthen student's musical intellect regarding
style periods through listening assignments in the Division of Fine Arts Media Center. After
completion of the semester, the student will:
1. Attend a minimum of 10 fine arts concerts outside of class and keep all programs as
proof of attendance.
2. Be able to find recordings relevant to their performance major and others in the Division
of Fine Arts Media Center and complete listening worksheets.
3. Be exposed to topics relevant to the music major, as presented by faculty and guest artist
from the Amarillo Symphony, Amarillo Opera and other arts organizations
4. Start building an online portfolio and presence.

Expected Student Behavior

1. Attend every class period.
2. Prepare questions for guest from the symphony and be prepared to ask and answer
questions.
3. Attend a minimum of 10 concerts/fine arts events per semester and turn in program/proof of attendance
4. Present yourself in a professional manner; look appropriate for special guests and performers.

 

 

Grading Criteria

This is a pass/fail class. Students must have a minimum of 10 concerts attended to pass.
Extra concerts will be added for every class period missed.

Practice rooms are available, located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice.
