Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Corequisite: RNSG 1309 and RNSG 1301

Course Description

Study of the concepts and principles necessary to perform basic nursing skills for the adult patient; and demonstrate competence in the performance of nursing procedures. Content includes knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

Civility Statement

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Medical Insurance Coverage

The Affordable Act requires that all U. S. citizens and legal residents have medical insurance coverage. If accidental injury occurs, students are required to file a claim with their personal insurance company. The Hartford insurance policy, currently in place at Amarillo College, is an accident policy that provides coverage over and above any other valid and collectible insurance held by the student. 

 

Grading Criteria

Grade Scale:

The following criteria will be used to determine your grade:

A-90

B-80-89

C-75-79

D-60-74

F- 59 and below.

There will be no rounding of grades. Example: a 79.9 will be a “C” and not a “B”.

Grading Criteria: The course grade for RNSG 1105 Nursing Skills will consist of the following:

1. 8 Skills:  70%
2. Evidenced-based practice discussions:  5%
3. Pre-lab quizzes:  5%
4. Final Exam:  20%

*A score of “0” will be given for any course assignments left incomplete and will result in clinical failure.

Nursing Labs:  70% of the course grade will come from the Nursing Skills Competency Checklist grades.  The following guidelines apply:

1. 8 skills:  worth 12.5 points each
   1. Breaking sterile technique in any area of the checklist will result in 0 points and student must repeat the skill for maximum of 6.25 points.
   2. 4 unsatisfactory ratings results in failure of the skill.  Student must repeat the skill for a maximum of 6.25 points. 

If student fails a skill, they must complete a minimum of 2 hours of remediation in the NRC.  The student must demonstrate the skill at least one time to a faculty or staff member during this time. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule remediation and the second attempt within one week of scheduled return demonstration.  Remediation must be completed within one week following the scheduled return demonstration.  The repeat return demonstration must be completed within 2 weeks of the return demonstration. Note: There will be no remediation or repeat return demonstrations on Tuesdays.  Remediation and the second attempt may not be completed on the same day.

*If student repeats a skill and fails on the second attempt, this will result in an automatic course failure.

NOTE:  The student must be present for all graded skill labs unless an excused absence is approved by the course instructor.  If the student misses the graded skill lab without instructor approval, the student will forfeit their first attempt and the highest number of points that can be earned is 6.25. 

Nursing Skill Make-up due to absence:

It is the student’s responsibility to schedule make-up of the skills demonstration.  Any make-up demonstration must be rescheduled and completed within one (1) week after the missed skill. If not demonstrated successfully on first attempt, the second attempt must be completed within one (1) week of the previous attempt. 

Skills Warnings:

The Skills Warning is written documentation that the student is not meeting the clinical objectives of the course. It provides a mechanism for the faculty to communicate directly with the student in a concise and timely manner.  An instructor may choose to document an incident in a narrative counseling record. A Skills Warning is equivalent to a counseling record. Conduct which warrants a Skills Warning includes but is not but is not limited to:

• Arriving late for clinical

• Not following the student dress code

• Inappropriate communication (verbal or nonverbal) to faculty, staff or other students.

• Not turning in assignments on time

• Unsatisfactory completion of assignments

1. Verbal:  more than 1 verbal warning will result in a skills warning

2. Warning:  must repeat skill for maximum of 6.25 points

Attendance

  Regular attendance is required. Less than 90% attendance may result in failure of the course.

 Course Requirements

1. Meet all requirements for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
2. Satisfactory completion of, or concurrent enrollment in courses from approved list.
3. Concurrent enrollment in RNSG 1309 Introduction to Nursing is required.  Both courses (RNSG 1309 and RNSG 1105) must be taken together. If one has to be repeated, both must be repeated.
4. Satisfactory grade of 75% or above combined course grade of pre-lab exams, group discussions nursing competencies, and final exam. A score of “0” will be given for any course assignments left incomplete and will result in clinical failure.
5. Classroom attendance of 90%.
