I am available on Fridays to answer any student questions and provide help. During this time, my main focus is to help you be successful in this course. Also, I am available anytime through email to answer any immediate student questions or to provide course help. I try to respond within 24 hours. If those times do not work for you, please don't hesitate to contact me, and we will set something that works with your schedule. It can be evenings and weekends if needed.

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) EDUC-1100-014 First Year Seminar - Learning Framework
A study of the: research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition and motivation; factors that impact learning; and application of learning strategies. Theoretical models of strategic learning, cognition and motivation serve as the conceptual basis for the introduction of college-level student academic strategies. Students use assessment instruments (e.g., learning inventories) to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses as strategic learners. Students are ultimately expected to integrate and apply the learning skills discussed across their own academic programs and become effective and efficient learners. Students developing these skills should be able to continually draw from the theoretical models they have learned.

Students enrolled in an educational program in preparation for obtaining certain occupational licenses are potentially ineligible for such license if the student has been convicted of an offense. For further information, please contact your advisor, the Legal Clinic, or the faculty member in charge of the educational program that you seek to enroll in. The further information you will receive will include notification to you of your right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the licensing authority in order to clarify your particular situation.

1. This is a lecture-based course. However, a large majority of the content will be derived from conversations, activities, and in-class assignments. You must participate to earn a passing grade in this course.
2. You are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Behaviors that are not supportive include, but are not limited to: tardiness/leaving early; electronic device noises; talking during lectures; abusive, offensive or disrespectful behavior/language.
3. You should address and sign all e-mails sent to your instructor and classmates. E-mails, like all academic work, should be proofread, should not include slang or abbreviations, and should not resemble text messages.
4. You should put your cell phone on vibrate or silent during class.
5. You should expect to have all homework completed before coming to class. This is especially true for course readings. Throughout the term, you will be asked to have read chapters/stories from the Common Reader. If you do not read the chapters/stories you will be asked to complete the assignments associated with the readings on your own, or, you will be asked to write a 3-page book report. If assigned the book report, students must also make an appointment with the Writer's Corner prior to submitting the report to faculty member(s).
6. If you are caught plagiarizing or cheating, you will receive a failing grade for the assignment. According to the Amarillo College Student Code of Conduct, plagiarism is the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another's work and the acknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one's own written work. If you are caught plagiarizing or cheating more than once, the instructor has the right to take appropriate actions as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Please review the Student Code of Conduct for a complete understanding of rules and policies.
7. Honesty, integrity, and respect will guide this course. You are expected to treat all participants with respect at all times. In discussing controversial issues, it is important that students feel comfortable expressing their opinion, yet it is imperative that students refrain from using derogatory or offensive language.

Grades in this course are not given, they are earned. As a student you will be required to complete the necessary work to earn your grade.

All work must be turned in on time to receive full credit. You may turn in assignments late, however, points will be deducted. Also, if an assignment (MindTap) has been closed either Joelysbeth or me ONLY can open it for you one time. If you need something opened more than once you will need approval from Dr. Petty.
Students may meet with a faculty member prior to any excused absences to develop a timeline for homework submission.
Excused absences are determined at faculty discretion. Please contact your faculty member as soon as you know you must miss a class session.
Regular attendance is essential for satisfactory completion of this course. Daily attendance is recorded and graded as a normal A, B, C, D, or F grade.
There are 31 total in-class days:
A = 31 - 27.9 days
B = 27.59 - 24.8 days
C = 24.49 - 21.7 days
D = 21.39 - 18.6 days
F = 18.29 days or less
There is no final exam for this course.
Class sessions are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9:00 am to 9:50 am in Parcells 410 (PARC 410). Students should make regular class attendance a priority for all of their courses. In addition to attendance grades, there will be many in-class assignment grades. If you are not in class you may not be able to make up those assignments, that is left up to the discretion of the faculty.
Leaving class more than 5 minutes prior to dismissal time or arriving more than 10 minutes late to class (without instructor permission) will be counted as an absence. Attendance codes are given at the end of class and will not be made available to students who leave early. Those students, who leave early, will be counted as tardy.
