Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisite: Computer literacy and keyboarding skill of 30 wpm

Course Description

Word processing software focusing on business applications. This course is designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

Benchmark Series:  Microsoft Word 2016, Levels 1 and 2 by Rutkosky and Roggenkamp, EMC Paradigm Publishing, Inc., (ISBN 978-0-76386-921-2). Benchmark Series: Microsoft Word 2016, Levels 1-2 Workbook (ISBN 978-0-76387-155-0

Required:  Microsoft Word 2016 (or Word 365) is required for this course; it is your choice whether to purchase the Professional version or the Home and Student version.  It is also your choice where you purchase the software.  You might consider www.JourneyEd.com (1-800-874-9001) as one of the many online sources.  Make sure you ask about student discounts.  The AC bookstore does sell the software at a reasonable price, too.

The above-referenced textbook and this course are written/designed for Word 2016.

  3. One USB portable storage device with minimum 2 GB capacity (Jump drive, Flash drive, Travel drive, Thumb drive, etc.

Required:  Microsoft Word 2016 is required for this course. The AC bookstore does offer the software Word 365 which includes Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint at a very reasonable price. Student Performance

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS OF COURSE:  Students will learn to prepare, format, and manage documents; create and enhance tables; and create a mail merge using Word 2016.

By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the Learning Outcomes (Minimum Competencies) with a competency level based on the completion of required examinations administered under the supervision of the instructor and evaluated according to the instructor’s grading scale in the Business Technology Department.

PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES (MINIMUM COMPETENCIES):

  1. Reinforce beginning keyboarding knowledge and skills.
  2. Learn, practice, and apply word processing concepts and features.
  3. Demonstrate word processing proficiency through assessments and timed production tests

END-OF-COURSE OUTCOMES:  Apply basic and advanced formatting skills and special functions to produce documents.

Expected Student Behavior

PLAGIARISM, CHEATING AND INDIVIDUAL WORK ETHIC:  The Amarillo College policies and Code of Student Conduct is strictly adhered to when dealing with plagiarism, cheating and duplication of work product.  Any evidence of plagiarism, cheating or duplication of work product will result in a zero on the project or test in question.

GRADING SCALE: See course schedule. Course grade: 90-100 = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; <60 = F

PRODUCTION TEST GRADING SCALE:

0 errors  =  100
1 error    =   90
2 errors  =   80
3 errors  =   70
4 errors  =   60
5+ errors =  50

Chapter projects and skill assessments are due as indicated on your syllabus. Chapter projects and assessments that are not submitted by the deadline will have ten points per week deducted.  Look ahead at your Course Schedule; work ahead to turn assignments in on time.
