Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. Student Performance

Clinical Evaluation

The clinical instructor will complete the Formative Evaluation of Clinical Competencies at students’ mid-point in the clinical experience. The purpose of this evaluation is to assess each student’s progress towards meeting RNSG2263’s clinical competencies and assist each student identify and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the clinical course.

At the end of the clinical experience:

§  Students are required to submit a numeric and narrative self-evaluation in achievement of RNSG 2263 Clinical Competencies.

§  The clinical instructor completes a summative evaluation on the CPEC for RNSG 2263.

§  Students will be evaluated by their RN preceptors. These evaluations are confidential and will assist in the summative evaluation.

A score of zero (Ø) in any clinical performance competency will automatically result in a failure of the clinical course.

Grading Criteria

GRADING CRITERIA/GRADE SCALE:

1. Criteria

The Clinical Performance Evaluation of Competencies (CPEC) constitutes 100% of the clinical grade. The CPEC is divided into four sections for evaluation purposes. These sections include the student’s role as (1) Member of the Profession, (2) Provider of Patient-Centered Care, (3) Patient Safety Advocate, and (4) Member of the Healthcare Team. Within these sections are the 10 Associate Degree Nursing Program Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) that are in bold print. Under each bolded SLO are competencies that a student is required to perform during a clinical rotation. Many of these competencies are “core”, which means they are common to all clinical courses in the nursing program. Specific competencies may be added to the “core” that addresses the unique needs of each clinical course. Specific competencies added to core competencies in RNSG 2263 Clinical - Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management include:

** Writing Assignments will have ten (10) points deducted for each day submitted past the due dates.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Students must complete 100% of all required clinical hours.

§  Students are responsible to report to the assigned clinical area on time and to be dressed according to the “Student Dress Code Policy for Clinical”.

§  The Clinical experience is an essential component of the program. Absenteeism jeopardizes the opportunity for successful completion of the course.  Clinical absences must be reported to the instructor at least 30 minutes before the time designated to report for the clinical experience.  Failure to notify the instructor prior to the clinical experience may result in failure of the course.  Students who arrive late to the clinical area may be asked to leave if report has been missed or arrival time is incongruent to providing appropriate patient care. Precepted students must also call the health care agency. Clinical absences will be made up at the discretion of the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the respective instructor regarding make-up assignments.  Failure to do so will result in failure to meet the course outcomes.  After an illness, a physician's statement may be required.

Hours and Days

§  The Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management clinical is a 96 hour clinical experience consisting of five 12 hour shifts in the acute care setting, a service learning experience at Heal the City, and two simulation activities in the Jones Hall Nursing Resource Center and a Evidence based discussion via Zoom conference.

§  Acute care setting shifts will be available on Thursdays, and Fridays. Exact times vary depending on clinical facilities’ change of shifts. Clinical assignments will be posted as quickly as possible after the semester begins.

§   Heal the City is chosen as the community service volunteer hours facility the clinic will be open on Monday and Tuesday. A sign up schedule will be available for sign up at clinical Orientation to meet your volunteer hour needs.

§  Simulation activity dates and times will be posted as quickly as possible after the semester begins.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management clinical experience is designed to enable the Level IV student to provide and mange care for multiple patients and their families under the guidance and direction of a registered nurse in a variety of clinical settings. The prioritization and organization of nursing care for multiple are emphasized during the clinical experience. The development and use of critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills is integral to the clinical experience. Self-directed behaviors and professional development are also emphasized and expected in the clinical component of the Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management course.

During the clinical experience, each student will be assigned to work with a registered nurse on a clinical unit. A nursing instructor will be on site to ensure clinical competencies are met. If the student is assigned to a preceptor, (Hereford, Dumas and Heal the City) the preceptor must be a registered nurse (RN) who has completed the online preceptor orientation and preceptor agreement located on the Amarillo College Nursing website at

https://www.actx.edu/nursing/index.php?module=pagesmith&uop=view_page&id=53. In order to meet course outcomes, the student, under the guidance of a designated RN and/or a preceptor, will share responsibility for multiple patients each clinical day. Clinical experiences include five 12 hours shifts in the acute care setting and one 3 hour service learning experience at Heal the City. The clinical experience also includes clinical simulation activities in the laboratory setting.
