Supplies

Supplies Required for this course: textbook, access to a computer with internet connection, calculator, and most importantly...

an access code for MyMathLab which should be included in a red and white envelope inside the front cover of your textbook.  If you took the Math 1350 course online last semester, you may register in this course's MyMathLab component using the same username and password for your account as last semester at no additional cost. To do this, get into AC Connect and click into our Blackboard course for this semester.  Click the MyMathLab link on the main menu inside our Blackboard course.  Click "Launch" and "continue" if a security message appears.  Enter your username and password from your previous online course which used the same textbook.  This should give you access to MyMathLab again this semester at no additional cost as long as it has not been over a year since you took the previous course and we are using the same textbook for this course as you used in your previous course.

You must be able to get into MyMathLab to take this class. If you do not have an access code or an account from last semester, you need to purchase one online at www.mymathlab.com or contact your instructor immediately for assistance.

Students Rights and Responsibilities

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Log in using the AC Connect Portal

In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to behave in a manner that is supportive of a positive learning environment.  This includes academic honesty.  Cheating is not allowed in any form.  Students are expected to perform their own work and exams at all times.  This is especially important concerning the Portfolio Project in this course.  Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated on any test or assignment for this course.  Plagiarism of any type will be considered academic dishonesty.  A grade of zero on the exam or assignment will be earned for any person found cheating or plagiarizing and the extent of the cheating may result in the student being dropped from the course.  This zero will not be used as a dropped grade.  In addition, students found cheating or plagiarizing may be subject to further disciplinary action as outlined in the Amarillo College Student's Rights and Responsibilities document.

Students may NOT use a cell phone of any kind at any time while taking any test/exam in this course.  This includes the online tests and the proctored written exams.  The penalty for using a cell phone during a test/exam may be an immediate "F" in the course and possibly even being dropped from the course.  Please plan to leave your cell phone in a different location while you are taking your tests/exams for this course.

Students are expected to behave in a manner that is respectful toward AC faculty, staff, students, and/or property.  Respectful behavior is especially important and expected when you come to take your midterm and final exams which are proctored.  Please give your utmost kindness and respect to the staff who are helping to administer/proctor your exams.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or with AC's "student Rights & Responsibilities" will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to: removal from the course, consultation with the department chair or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

Grading Criteria

Grading Criteria: The final grades of A (90-100), B (80-89) C (70-79), D (60-69), and F (below 60) will be computed as the weighted average of the earned grades from:

  • Homework Average 14% (One lowest homework grade is dropped)
  • Portfolio 16%
  • Average of 3 highest Online Chapter Tests 30%
  • The Midterm Exam 20%
  • Comprehensive Final Exam 20%

Examinations: You will take 4 timed online tests, one after each of chapters 13, 14, 9 and 10. The online chapter tests will be taken using MyMathLab. The three highest of these online chapter tests will be averaged and the lowest dropped.  PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the DUE DATES for these online chapter tests which are posted on the MyMathLab calendar.  If the due date passes and you have not taken your Online Chapter Test, you will get a zero for that grade.  I will, however, drop one lowest online chapter test grade at the end of the semester.  The Midterm and the Final Examination will be given on the dates and times listed in the "attendance policy" section of this syllabus.  You must choose/reserve  times for you to take both the midterm and final exams and notify your instructor via e-mail within the first two weeks of this course.  If you live in Hereford, Dumas, or another distant location, you may choose to have your exams proctored at another location such as Moore County or Hereford Campus or at your local college's testing center. If so, please notify your instructor immediately via e-mail to obtain instructions as to how you can set up your exam at your desired closer location.  It takes extra time and effort to set up the exams at another location, so be sure to let your instructor know as soon as possible that you need to take your exams at an alternate location.  If you fail to notify your instructor of your desire to have either of your exams proctored at a different location within the first two weeks of the semester, you forfeit the opportunity to test anywhere other than at the AC MathTesting Lab located in Durrett 103 on the Washington Street Campus of AC.  The Final Exam will be a comprehensive exam and will be a paper and pencil test. You must bring a picture ID to take your Midterm and Final exams.  You will also want to bring your calculator and pencils.  No cell phone use of any kind will be allowed during your online or proctored exams in this course.  A grade of "F" in the course will be awarded if you attempt to use your cell phone while taking any exam in this course and may also result in being dropped completely from this course.  Please plan to leave your cell phone at a different location when you take any test or exam in this course.

Makeup Policy: It is the policy of the Math Department that make-up exams will NOT be given. Only in extreme, verifiable, and documented cases will any exception to this rule be considered. If tests are not completed by the deadline stated, a grade of zero will be awarded.

Homework:  Your online homework using MyMathLab will comprise your entire homework grade for this course.  BE SURE to pay CLOSE ATTENTION to the due dates and times for each assignment which are posted in the MyMathLab calendar.  These due dates are also part of your Assignment Schedule found under the Lessons main menu option in your AC Connect course.  There are weeks where you have multiple homework assignments due.  Some are due in the middle of the week, and some are due on Monday night.  If the due date passes and you have not done your homework, you will get a grade of zero for that homework grade.  I will drop one lowest homework grade at the end of the semester.  Class Discussions and your Course Information Quiz also count as homework grades.  Please be sure to do the Course Information Quiz at the beginning of the semester and the Class Chapter Discussions as the semester moves along.  These are found under the "Discussions" and also the “Lessons” tab of your blackboard course.  If you get zeros for those easy assignments, it sure hurts your grade.  If you do those easy assignments, it really helps your grade!!!

Portfolio: An electronic portfolio will be developed during the semester.  You will have two due dates spread throughout the semester and you will be submitting your portfolio electronically.  I will grade your portfolios electronically and post your results in our course gradebook.  It will include a teacher interview, a collection of four math websites, games, or ipad apps, and development of a lesson using the Smart Notebook software.  You will need to state the TEKS related to the latter two parts of your portfolio.  Detailed instructions for the creation of your portfolio are found in the AC Connect course information documents found under the "Lessons" tab of the Blackboard course main menu.  Please be sure to read these documents within the first three days of the course and get started right away on this project as it is a large part (16%) of your overall grade in this course.

Attendance

This course will be web-based. Lectures can be viewed at the online site www.mymathlab.com using the multimedia library inside MyMathLab. Instructor Power Point presentations and videos can be viewed inside the Blackboard course under the "Lessons" tab.  Mastery of the material will be facilitated by reading the text and Power Point lessons, completing the student course notes provided under the Lessons tab, viewing MyMathLab videos, working through examples and solving homework problems from the text and online. Chapter Tests will be given online. A Midterm Exam and a comprehensive Final Exam must be proctored at the Amarillo College Math Testing Lab or at another site agreed to by your instructor.  You must tell your instructor via e-mail within 2 weeks of the beginning of the course as to the dates, location, and approximate times you plan to take your midterm and final exams.  Please choose a date and time from the following schedule and let me know your desired exam dates and times for BOTH exams via e-mail as soon as possible and at the latest by the end of the 2nd week of the semester.  This email is mandatory and very important.

Midterm Exam Dates:  Thursday, June 27th, 8am - 10pm; Friday, June 28th , 8am - 12 noon; Saturday, June 29th , 12noon - 4pm; and Monday, July 1st 8am - 10pm

Final Exam Dates: Thursday, July 18th 8am - 10pm; Friday, July 19th, 8am - 8pm; Saturday July 20th 9am - 8pm; and Monday, July 22nd 8am - 10pm

Math Testing Lab Phone: 371-5088.

I request that these two tests be proctored.  If none of these dates are possible for you, please contact your instructor right away so that a possible solution can be worked out between you and your instructor.  These testing issues must be all settled and scheduled by the first two weeks of the semester.

Attendance Policy: Since this is an online class, your attendance is achieved by logging into this course AT LEAST three times per week on different days of the week and by completing homework, test, discussion, and communication assignments by the due dates set by the instructor.  Please stay current with your assignments and with class announcements.  Please respond promptly to e-mails and requests from your instructor.  Due dates for assignments, quizzes, and exams will be strictly enforced. Homework and tests not completed by the due date will earn a grade of zero.  It is easy to get behind in an online class; so stay motivated and do not procrastinate. The last day on which you may drop this course with a "W" is Monday, July 15th.  If for some reason you stop working on the course and decide that you do not have time because of other commitments, you MUST MEET with your instructor in person to obtain a signed "Withdrawal Approval Form" and subsequently turn in that form to the Ask AC/Registrar's desk by the due date listed above.  Approval to withdraw “W” is given based on the instructor observing a “good faith” effort on the part of the student to complete the requirements of this course.  Homework attempts done in MyMathLab, communication with your instructor via email, and test attempts in MyMathLab are examples of a “good faith” effort on the part of the student in this course.  Be sure to pay close attention to this matter as the semester progresses.

ADMINISTRATIVE DROP POLICY

The Census date for this course is June 10th, 2019.  Any student not in attendance in this course by that date will be administratively dropped from the course.  Because this is an online course, attendance is defined as logging into the course and completing homework, tests, discussions, and communications by the due dates set in the syllabus, mymathlab, and assignment schedule document for this course.

Calendar

For this Summer 2019 Semester, the Final will be taken between Thursday, July 18th and Monday, July 22ndThe absolute due date by which the Final must be completed is Monday, July 22nd at 10pm.

The last date to drop this course with a grade of "W" is Monday, July 15th .  If you wish to withdraw from this course, you must obtain a signed withdrawal form from your instructor and submit that form to the Ask AC desk in the registrar's office by the due date.  Please note that late drops for a "W" past the above date will not be given under any circumstances.
