The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. It is desired that course goals be accomplished to the extent that the student’s final grade is not less than a grade of “C” as evaluated by the program faculty. A final Grade less than “C” will result in failure of the course.

Overall, this course is designed to be as fluid and flexible as possible to address the unique needs of each student cohort. Content therefore may seem less “structured” than students are used to in order to reinforce gaps that may exist (particular to each individual group’s progression through the program). Ample time, and direction, will be provided to prepare for any assessments that may arise throughout the semester.
Students will be evaluated in three learning domains: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. Each domain MUST be successfully mastered to pass the course. Failure of any one domain constitutes failure of the class.

Performance:
(Number of sessions minus number of sessions absent)/number of sessions X 100 = Attendance GPA. Remember though: 4 absences results in an automatic “F” for the course! In addition, GPA is also linked to participation as evaluated by program faculty. Lack of, or poor, participation will result in grade reductions. Additionally, Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) will be conducted at the beginning of each class in the following areas: Preparatory, Airway, Patient Assessment, Trauma, and EMS Operations. In order to pass the class in addition to and separate from attendance, a performance rating of "good" must be achieved twice in all areas, with at least one "excellent" rating in any one area. CAT grading shall correspond as follows:
Cat tests may be taken on an unlimited basis. The highest scores will be recorded. At the end of the semester, ratings of "F" in any one of the two highest attempts results in failure of the class. Quizzes and/or Exams may be included based on each individual cohort’s relation to the End-of-Course Outcomes statement above. i.e. (but not limited to): Drug or Drip calculation assessments
Overall Grading scale: A = 90+ GPA B = 80 to 89 GPA C = 70 to 79 GPA F = 69 and below GPA
Students should NOT expect decimal grade rounding. |
Performance:
Regular attendance is mandatory for successful completion of this course
Note: Skills examinations may be administered as laboratory practical exams. All skills exams must be performed to a level deemed satisfactory by the skills examiner.
The skills examiner will use the criteria of the Texas Department of State Health Services and/or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to evaluate skills performance.

Attendance is CRITICAL to your success in this class. Each class session contributes towards your course grade; which, due to the nature of this course, is HEAVILY weighted towards attendance and participation.
A specific calendar of events is difficult to outline in that each cohort of students have differing needs in relation to the “Course Description, and the “End-of-Course Outcomes” described above.
The course meets for 4 hours, 1-day each week throughout the semester as outlined at registration.
Exceptions to the policies and procedures outlined in this syllabus will be dealt with on an individual basis at the discretion of the instructor.
