Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to log in and being completing assignments on the FIRST day of this class, and continue working within the class daily throughout the semester. If you anticipate a day or two interruption to your classwork, it is your responsibility to work ahead to ensure you do not get behind in your skill development and course submissions. All assignments are available and open for students to complete for a time period of no less than three days to allow ample time for submission of materials. Students are accountable for planning their time wisely and submitting work well before deadlines to avoid last-minute technical or human complications. Course deadlines will NOT be extended. The structure of this course is pretty fast and furious. Some of the concepts may seem fairly basic, but will quickly build into ideas that will be completely new to you. KEEP PRACTICING, and keep at it. For incoming music majors, when you come across something that feels overwhelming, please know that these are the terms and skills you will be using throughout your four-semester Music Theory and Aural Skills and Sightsinging courses. IT WILL GET EASIER, but you must keep working. Setting a daily routine of practicing these skills (and your instrument!) is the foundation of every successful musician.

Grading Criteria

UTheory has video lessons, skills practice, and checkpoints. The most effective approach to learning is to practice every day, and I’ve set up UTheory with due dates to keep you on track. However, I highly recommend you work several days ahead of the due dates - our goal is not only to meet course competencies, but to recall these skills quickly and accurately.

Your final grade will be an average of the first day's "Register Your UTheory Code" assignment plus all of the lessons, skills, and checkpoints that Google has you complete in uTheory.

UTheory lessons and skills will provide automatic feedback and grading.  Remember, you are expected to repeat these activities until you know the material well -- there is no excuse for not making an A in this course.  Keep in mind that it is common to be over-confident if you do well at the beginning, so be careful to take this seriously and keep up with the checkpoints!

  • UTheory Lesson Completion = 37% of UTheory Grade

Watching the lessons will be tracked to make up a portion of your final grade.

  • UTheory Skills Competence = 43% of UTheory Grade

Practice the skills for each lesson until you feel confident with your knowledge of the material, and your grade for the skill.  The more you practice, the higher your grade will be.  A minimum score of 80% must be reached in all rhythm lessons and skills.

  • UTheory Checkpoints = 20% of UTheory Grade

These skills are crucial to your success as a student and professional. You therefore must demonstrate fluency in order to pass this course. Please pay close attention to these strict grading policies for the UTheory checkpoints:

  • There are three course " checkpoints which must be completed in order to move to the next set of materials.
  • You may take each checkpoint up to fifty times to improve your score.
  • To get credit for a checkpoint, you must complete it with a score of 85% or higher by the due date listed to access the next set of course materials. DO NOT WAIT until the due date to take the checkpoint.
  • To pass the class, you must achieve a score of 85% or greater on each of these checkpoints.
  1. Pianos, clefs and accidentals (due July 14)

  2. Major scales and keys (due July 26)

  3. Minor scales and keys (due Aug 3)

Grade scale is as follows:

  • A = 90-100.5
  • B = 80-89
  • C= 70-79
  • D = 60-69
  • F = -59

Attendance

Students are expected to spend approximately 3-5 hours per day (8-week and summer terms) logged into the course. Although you may end up way above or below these averages, plan to spend anywhere between nine and fifteen hours per week working on these lessons. The entire course takes place on the web.
