AI Statement

Collusion is defined as “the unauthorized collaboration with another person or by any other means, including artificial intelligence (AI) and computer translators, in preparing work for fulfillment of course requirements.” Using AI like (ChatGPT or Google Gemini) to create a document is considered colluding. The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence on specific assignments is at the discretion of the instructor.

Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) There is no required text for this class.  Our trip-related book will be provided.

A passport is required to be eligible for the international trip.  A picture of your passport, or the receipt for your passport must be shown to Professor Ingham by Sept. 15, 2025, in order for you to be eligible for the international trip.

Expected Student Behavior

Grading Criteria

Course grade will be determined by the following percentages:

30% Out-of-class Enrichment activities (volunteer work, arts performances, etc.)

30% Presentations

30% Group Project
  -- Project Planning Sheet
  -- Project Execution, Evaluation, Accountability

10% End-of-Semester Reflection Paper

ASSIGNMENTS

Group Project 
Each student will be assigned a Project Group and will work with team members to fulfill group responsibilities.  The entire Scholars Seminar class will provide the ‘manpower’ for events and activities; however, each Project Group will coordinate planning and execution for that group’s particular responsibilities.

Grades will be based on the overall success of the project including planning, organization, teamwork, leadership and creativity and the individual contribution to the group.

Group 1: This group will assist with events and activities surrounding cultural and historical awareness

Responsibilities will include:

• Creating and delivering an interactive presentation for the class on the importance developing an appreciation of arts, culture, and history as part of a college education.

• Creating a list of arts and cultural events this semester in Amarillo and Canyon.

• Finding a minimum of two cultural events for the Scholars to attend as a group (musical and theater performances, art shows, museum visits, etc.) Coordinate the event attendance and a preview discussion/debriefing during class time before and after the event. 

• Other duties as assigned or as determined necessary by the group

Group 2: This group will coordinate leadership opportunities on- campus at AC, as well as leading our book discussion in class. 

Responsibilities will include:

• Creating and delivering an interactive presentation for the class on the importance of mastering teamwork skills as part of a college education.

• Devising a fun activity for AC's Fallfest.  Coordinates set up, clean up and staffing of booth. 

• Host/coordinate class lunches as assigned.

• Lead book discussions in class.

• Spearhead a project that can be a service to the college, provided by the honors program.

• Other duties as assigned or as determined necessary by the group

Group 3: This group will create and execute a community service project (ongoing or a one-time event)

Responsibilities will include:

• Creating and delivering an interactive presentation for the class on the importance of serving others as part of a college education.

• Facilitating 2-3 community service projects that can be carried out during Fall semester

• Coordinating arrangements with community organization

• Creating a schedule for Scholars to participate in the service project and coordinating sign-ups

• Other duties as assigned or as determined necessary by the group

Out-of-Class Events
Numerous enrichment activities outside of seminar class time will be offered, some of which will be optional and others will be mandatory.  Scholars are expected to participate in a minimum of three out-of-class events.  Events that take place during normal seminar class time will not count toward this total.  Attendance and participation must be documented. Taking photos or notes to document attendance at events is highly encouraged.

High School/Community Presentations  (this assignment might not be necessary)
As a class, we will contact high school teachers, counselors and community groups to arrange opportunities to share information regarding Scholars and Honors. Students may be required to give brief presentations.

Class Attendance/Participation 
Because your success in this class depends on your ability to collaborate during class time, regular attendance is essential for satisfactory achievement. Your participation will directly affect your grade. Daily attendance will be recorded. Points will be deducted from your final course grade for more than two absences -- regardless of the reason for the absence. Leaving class prior to dismissal time or arriving late will be counted as an absence. Should you need to miss class due to illness or other conflict, please notify your project team and Mrs. Ingham.
