Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Student Performance

Grades and Expectations

Your success matters. Grades reflect consistent effort, engagement, and mastery across the 8-week term, not last-minute surges.

Stay current with readings, assignments, and discussions.

  • Use office hours or email me; ask for clarification as soon as you feel stuck.
  • Expect regular feedback to guide improvement.

Final Week Responsiveness: During the last week, response times may be limited due to grading volume. Plan ahead and bring grade questions before the final week.

Final Grades

I don't round up final grades by request. Your grade should reflect demonstrated mastery.

  • Use the course rubrics/subject matter before submitting to align your work with the criteria.
  • Meet with me in advance for clarification and strategy.
  • Leverage any provided extra credit opportunities during the term.
  • Visit the AC tutoring centers for support.

A Note on Extra Credit

There will not be any solicited extra credit at the end of the course. A few opportunities may be built into the term and will be clearly announced.

Late Assignments are generally not accepted. Reach out to me with the specifics of the assignment at least a week before it is due, if possible. Extensions before due dates may be possible on a case-by-case basis.

AI Tools, Your Learning, and Academic Integrity

We will use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) to support learning, not replace your original thinking.

  • Utilize AI to brainstorm, organize, and revise, while still producing original work.
  • Cite all sources you use, including those suggested by AI, with credible references.
  • Follow this course's policy; other instructors may have different rules.

Integrity Reminder: AI use must be ethical and transparent. Your submitted work should reflect your understanding and voice.

When you share links, please ensure they're accessible by the due date so that your classmates and I can review your work when applicable.

  • Silence phones: Avoid interruptions.
  • Respect peers: No homework or distractions during speeches.
  • Dress to impress: Respectful, professional, but comfortable.
  • Respect peers: No homework or distractions during speeches.
  • Stay until dismissal: Leaving early = loss of participation points.

Final Exam

Monday 5/11 (tentative)

This is an earlier deadline than the school calendar to ensure there is time to grade and submit final course grades by AC's Friday noon reporting cutoff.

No late final exams will be accepted after the set deadline. No extensions can be granted for the final exam due to the college reporting deadline.

Tip: Add a calendar reminder now.

Late Work
  • Late work is generally not accepted. NOTE: All Connect E-Book Assignments are due Monday nights at 11:59 p.m. each week, except for the first week. Papers and projects are usually due on Wednesdays.
  • Extensions: Granted case by case; communicate early and often.
  • Week 1 Grace Period: If you stumble in Week 1, contact me in Week 2 to find a solution. After Week 2 begins, the grace period expires.
  • Beyond Week 1: Late work is generally not accepted. I will still support you and help you plan for success.

College is a process. Life happens. This is a fast-paced course, and the structure is designed to give you the best chance to learn and demonstrate mastery. While late submissions are generally not accepted, I may adjust upcoming due dates after we meet about documented extenuating circumstances.

If I grant an extension, please visit with me in person during office hours, email me, or message me so we can find a solution.

Pathways to Success: What to Do

  • Contact me as soon as a problem arises.
  • Be flexible. I will be flexible when I can, especially early in the term.
  • Near the end of the term, flexibility is limited. If I say no, unfortunately, it means we've run out of viable options.

What Not to Do

  • Please do not submit assignments by email unless I specify in class or by email. I will not grade them.
  • If there is a system or technical issue:
    • Check course announcements.
    • Check your AC email.
    • If nothing is posted, text or email me to alert me. Don't assume I already know.

Attendance

Attendance and Participation

This is an in-person course. We meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in Parcells Hall Rm. 217. Your presence and contributions are essential to meet satisfactory educational achievements. If life throws some unexpected curve balls, don't hesitate to send me a message or visit with me in-person ASAP. We'll work together to keep you on track.

Excused Absences -

Campus-Sponsored Activities: If you're representing Amarillo College, an email from your coach or sponsor counts as your "golden ticket". If it's a standard All-AC announcement, a quick heads-up helps me track your feats.

Short-Term Absences (1-2 days) -

No need for a doctor's note. A quick email is plenty to rest, recover, and return ready. Communication is the key.

Extended Absences (longer than 1 week) -

Bring a doctor's note or a note from your employer, if work necessitates your extended absence. Communicating with me is the key to help keep you on course.

Excused Absences are valuable because...
  • Peace of Mind: Reduces stress about missing class and helps you focus on recovery.
  • Catching Up: Opens the door to negotiate deadlines and avoid falling behind.
  • Support and Understanding: Life happens - excused absences allow creative solutions.
  • Maintaining Good Standing: Keeps unexcused absences from piling up.

Remember: If absences will impact assignments, you must communicate with me before the due date. We will work through it and find a solution together.

NOTE: NO missing assignments in the grade book and a high class average (A or B) is rewarded with Final Exam EXEMPTION! If you actively participate every time we meet, and you turn in every assignment, you DO NOT have to take the final exam!
