Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

As outlined in the learning plan, the student will apply the theory, concepts and skills involving
specialized material, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws and interaction within and
among political, economic, environmental, social and legal systems associated with the
particular occupation and the business/industry. Demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety

Upon completion of RNSG 2262 : Clinical - Heathcare Concepts II-  the student will:

  1. Describe the professional standards and an ethical-legal framework within the nurse’s legal scope of practice pertinent to caring for adult patients.
  2. Identify personal accountability and professional responsibility to promote  professional development.
  3. Discuss evidence-based practice data relevant to promote nursing competence in holistic care to adults.

Provider of Patient-Centered Care

  1. Discuss interventions to assist in the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health of the adult patient.
  2. Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning skills to develop comprehensive, holistic patient-centered plans of care that address the unique needs of the adult patient.
  3. Identify theoretical concepts and principles to meet the unique psycho-social, cultural, and spiritual needs of the adult patient.
  4. Summarize principles of health teaching needs in the care of adults.
  5. Identify basic nursing skills utilized in the care of the culturally diverse adult patient.
  6. Outline effective compassionate behaviors and communication skills for providing care to diverse adult patients.

Expected Student Behavior

See A.D.N. Student Handbook Professional Conduct, ANA code of Ethics and Amarillo College Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Each student will adhere to the student handbook policies and procedures, the Amarillo College Nursing Honor Code Policy, Social Networking Policy, and all agency policies, including HIPAA. Any violation of these policies and procedures may result in failure of the course and possible dismissal from the program.

Students are to arrive on time and be prepared for the clinical setting with the appropriate supplies and materials.
 

Grading Criteria

Students will receive a formative evaluation weekly and at the midpoint of their clinical rotation. Students will receive a summative evaluation at the completion of their clinical rotation.

Definitions (ACEN, 2023):

“The use of assessment methods to gauge students’ comprehension and learning by comparing it against a standard or benchmark while learning is in progress (Formative) or at the completion of a learning experience, such as a unit or course (Summative).

Formative evaluation methods provide ongoing feedback to assist the student and faculty to identify the student’s strengths/weaknesses regarding learning achievement and target areas that need work.

Summative evaluation usually involves students receiving a grade that indicates their level of performance on an assignment, examination, and/or course that reflects learning achievement.”

GRADING CRITERIA/GRADE SCALE:

  •  Overall grade scale: A = 89.5-100, B = 79.5-89.4, C = 74.5-79.44, D = 59.5 - 79.4, F = below 60

Final Grade:

  • Work Based Learning Experience – Evaluation of Student Performance= 100%

Attendance

Students must complete 100% of all required clinical hours: clinical orientation, assignments, clinical hours and simulation.  Total Clinical Hours: 144.

Students are responsible for reporting to the assigned clinical area on time and being dressed according to the “Student Dress Code Policy for Clinical”.

Clinical experience is an essential component of the program. Absenteeism jeopardizes the opportunity for successful completion of the course. Clinical absences must be reported to the instructor before pre-clinical conference. Failure to notify the instructor before the pre-clinical conference may result in failure of the course. Students who arrive late to the clinical area may be asked to leave if the report has been missed or the arrival time is incongruent with providing appropriate patient care.

Clinical absences will be made up at the discretion of the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the respective instructor regarding make-up assignments. Failure to do so will fail to meet the course outcomes. After an illness, a physician's statement may be required.

Students that are not in compliance with the dress code and required supplies to the clinical site are sent home for the day.  Students must make-up the absence, and will also receive a clinical warning.

AMARILLO COLLEGE – ADN

RNSG 2262 Clinical-  Healthcare Concepts II

Students will be assigned to a 9 hr/day - 6 week clinical rotation on Thursdays and Fridays or a 12 hr/day 4 week clinical rotation, 4 hr simulation and community Mental Health assignment during the 16 week course. Clinical assignments will be available no later than the 2nd week of the course.

Additional Information

Course Requirements

  1. Achievement of at least 90% on the Level IV Dosage and Solution Exam.  The exam may be repeated twice prior to the clinical experience. Failing to pass this exam by the third attempt will result in the inability to attend the clinical experience and inability to meet the course competencies.
  2. Students will not be allowed to participate in the clinical experience without current immunizations, TB skin testing, and American Heart Association CPR for Healthcare Providers. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all documentation is presented in a timely manner prior to the clinical experience. A Class II Clinical Warning will be issued for no documentation.
  3. Completion of all required clinical hours.
  4. Achievement of 75% or greater on the CPEC (a score of 0 in any clinical performance competency will result in a clinical failure). 
  5. Submission of all required clinical assignments.
  6. Completion of any student/instructor contracts, lab assignments, and clinical simulation activities.
  7. Clinical - Nursing Concepts IV and Healthcare Concepts 4 must be taken concurrently and both courses must be satisfactorily completed in the same semester.
