AI Statement

Collusion is defined as “the unauthorized collaboration with another person or by any other means, including artificial intelligence (AI) and computer translators, in preparing work for fulfillment of course requirements.” Using AI like (ChatGPT or Google Gemini) to create a document is considered colluding. The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence on specific assignments is at the discretion of the instructor.

Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) MATH-2413-002 Calculus I

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: MATH 1314 and MATH 1316 -minimum grade of C, or Department Chair consent

Course Description

Limits and continuity; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; definition of the derivative of a function and techniques of differentiation; applications of the derivative to maximizing or minimizing a function; the chain rule, mean value theorem and rate of change problems; curve sketching; definite and indefinite integration of algebraic, trigonometric and transcendental functions, with an application to calculation of areas.

Textbooks

No textbook is required for this course.  All course content will be provided in Blackboard.  Students should be prepared to print the course materials, including notes and homework for each section covered in class as well as other resources.

Student Performance

1.)  Calculate limits graphically, numerically, and algebraically.

2.)  Define the continuity of a function at a point, on an interval, and at endpoints.

3.)  Find derivatives by definition and with rules of differentiation.

4.)  Find the equations of lines tangent to and normal to curves.

5.)  Study the derivative as a general rate of change, and apply to position, velocity, and acceleration functions.

6.)  Use implicit differentiation to find the slope of an implicit function, and solve related rate problems.

7.)  Use the derivative to identify intervals of increase, decrease, and concavity, and identify local extrema and inflection points.

8.)  Solve real world optimization problems.

9.)  Calculate finite and infinite Riemann sums.

10.)   Learn basic integration rules, and use definite integrals to calculate area, arc length, and volume.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. If the grade you make on the final exam is higher than your lowest unit exam, it will replace that unit test grade, therefore comprising 35% of your grade.  If your final exam is lower than your unit exam grades, it will only count 20%.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken every day in lecture and lab, so please be on time.

Only students enrolled in the class are permitted to attend.  Please make child care arrangements to accommodate your attendance.

The deadline to drop this course is Thursday, April 23, 2026.  If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.

Additional Information

Lecture

  • Consult the daily schedule, and have the notes and homework printed from Blackboard before class begins.
  • We will begin lecture promptly, so please be on time.
  • Keep cell phone usage to a minimum during class.
  • Please remove your earbuds or airpods during class.
  • Review your notes after class, and begin working on homework as soon as possible.  It will be due the next day!
  • If you miss class, you are responsible for copying the notes from me (in person) or another student.

    Homework

    While you can complete some homework directly on the printed homework forms, such as those with graphs or answer blanks, most homework problems must be completed on notebook paper.

    • Put  your first and last name in the top right corner of the page.
    • Put your last name in the top right corner of every subsequent page.
    • Write the section number and title of the section on the title line on the first page.
    • Complete the problems in order.
    • Clearly number each problem.
    • Write down each problem.
    • Show all necessary work.
    • Box, circle, or highlight your answers.
    • Fasten all homework papers in order in a three ring binder.
    • Credit will not be given if homework is illegible, incomplete, or disorganized.
    • If you need help with the homework problems, please visit the tutoring center before lab begins the next day.
    • Homework will be due at the beginning of lab the next day.
    • You must submit your homework in person.  I do not accept electronically submitted homework.
    • 10 points per day will be deducted for late homework.

    Lab

    • We will begin lab promptly, so please be on time.
    • Submit your homework to myself or the lab assistant for a completion grade at the beginning of lab.
    • You will be randomly assigned a lab group for the day.  (The number and size of the lab groups will depend on how many homework problems there are.)
    • Your lab group will be assigned a problem from the homework to present on the board.
    • During the presentations and lab discussion, you will be responsible for checking your homework for accuracy, and making corrections where necessary.
    • Once all homework problems have been completed on the board, you will then complete a lab quiz.
    • No resources, such as notes, homework, or electronic devices will be permitted during the lab quiz.
    • The lab quiz will consist of one to five questions very similar to the homework questions.
    • Submit your lab quiz by the end of lab. 
    • If you miss lab, you will not be permitted to take the lab quiz outside of class.  (Remember you have 2 drop grades.)  The only exception to this is if participation in an official Amarillo College event requires you to miss school.  You must provide documentation of your absence. 
    • Lab quizzes will be graded for correctness and returned the next day.

    Test Days

    • Four unit exams will be given in class.
    • Each exam consists of two parts.  Part 1 will be taken during lecture (1 hour 15 minutes), and part 2 will be taken during lab (50 minutes).
    • No notes, notecards, phones, other electronic devices, or any other resources may be used during exams.
    • Please turn baseball caps backward during exams, and space out seating as much as possible.
    • You may use your TI-84 Plus calculator during exams, but no phone calculators will be permitted during exams.
    • Please use the restroom before class, because no bathroom breaks will be permitted during exams.
    • No communication with other students is permitted during exams.
    • You must be present in class to take both parts of the exam.  No make-up exams are allowed.  (Remember that your final exam can cover a missed exam.)  The only exception to this is if participation in an official Amarillo College event requires you to miss school.  You must provide documentation of your absence and arrange to take your exam in advance.
