AI Statement

Collusion is defined as “the unauthorized collaboration with another person or by any other means, including artificial intelligence (AI) and computer translators, in preparing work for fulfillment of course requirements.” Using AI like (ChatGPT or Google Gemini) to create a document is considered colluding. The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence on specific assignments is at the discretion of the instructor.

Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Skill development in concepts, procedures, and application of spreadsheets. This course is designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

  • Access to a computer — ideally a Windows-based personal computer. (A MacBook will work for most assignments.)

  • Reliable internet access

  • Storage media (a portable storage device with at least 4 GB capacity, or a cloud storage solution)

  • Microsoft 365 subscription with Excel 2025 installed on the computer you will be using

  • Please note: A Chromebook cannot be used to complete the majority of assignments.

  • Microsoft Office 365 Information:
    Microsoft Office 365 is required for this course. Currently enrolled AC students can access a free subscription. Instructions for downloading and installing Microsoft 365 are available on Blackboard.

Student Performance

Goals and Purpose
This course continues with advanced topics in spreadsheet  while developing skills to create, format, analyze, and share data using Excel. Students will learn to apply advanced formulas and functions—including financial, logical, lookup, math, and statistical functions. We will continue with the study of Pivot tables and learn the advantage of knowing the Power Pivot

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply advanced functions to process and analyze data

  2. Learn how to use decision-making tools

  3. Learn to manage data in multiple sheets/workbook

  4. Learn to import, format, and process data from external sources

  5. Learn to employ statistical functions to analyze data for decision makeing

  6. Summarize data with PivotTables, PivotCharts, and analysis tools.

  7. Import/export data and integrate with other applications.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work. Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College. The faculty of the BSET Department reserves the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test by reproducing any specific section or all of the test in question. Any action that comprises the computer systems at Amarillo College, including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of "F" in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

If student's grade falls below 75, you will need to attend mandatory tutoring as per department policy

Grading Criteria

Student grades are based on the following:  Weekly assignments are due on at their posted due date. The Grader projects will remain open for 2 weeks past the due date. Exams may be made up only in emergencies. If you cannot make it to an in-class assignment/exam day, arrangements may be made with the instructor prior to the date to complete the assignment/exam early. The lowest project grade will be dropped.

Your semester grade will be determined from the following criteria:

  • Excel Training + MOS Training - 20%
  • Excel Grader Project - 35%
  • Final (MOS Excel 365 Associate) - 20%
  • Hands-on Project - 15%
  • Attendance & Participation - 10%

Final Grade Scale:

  • A: 90-100
  • B: 80-89
  • C: 70-79
  • D: 60-69
  • F: Below 60

Attendance

Week 1 assignments must be completed by Monday, 3/30 @ 10pm, in order to be considered PRESENT in the course. Failure to complete all assignments by this date may lead to an administrative drop from the course.

Check your email daily and turn in assignments on time.

Students should plan on spending a minimum of 6-8 hours per week on this course--outside of the classroom. Actual amounts will vary depending on weekly assignments and topic complexity.

  • The Underground: AC's new student technology/collaboration lab in the basement of the Ware Student Commons on the Washington Street Campus. The underground labs are also open on Sundays from 2 pm to 6 pm
