AI Statement

Collusion is defined as “the unauthorized collaboration with another person or by any other means, including artificial intelligence (AI) and computer translators, in preparing work for fulfillment of course requirements.” Using AI like (ChatGPT or Google Gemini) to create a document is considered colluding. The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence on specific assignments is at the discretion of the instructor.

Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills

Course Description

Study of medical terms through word origin and structure. Introduction to abbreviations and symbols, surgical and diagnostic procedures, and medical specialties.

We will utilize a variety of instructional and learning techniques in this class. Although many tools  will be provided, students will need to have a few supplies with them in class every day in order to  be prepared. Necessary items include: 

A college ruled spiral notebook or composition book (preferably composition book) Computer, Chromebook or other individual electronic device. (not phones)

Student Performance

End-of-Course Outcomes:  Identify, pronounce, and spell medical terms; use terms in context; build and analyze medical terms; and use medical references as resource tools.

COURSE GOALS:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze medical words by using the tools of word analysis by dividing them into component parts, (prefixes, combining forms, & suffixes), which will enable the student to understand complex terminology easier.
  2. Relate the medical terms to the structure and function of the human body in the context of how the body works in health and disease.
  3. Become proficient in the spelling and pronunciation of medical terminology.

Expected Student Behavior

It is the responsibility of the student to access the course on a regular basis, participate and complete required assignments, quizzes and exams.

Grading Criteria

Tests: exams, quizzes and projects – 30% 

Daily Work: homework, daily work, journals and worksheets – 50% 

Participation: bell work, review games, labs, discussion boards – 20% 

Medical Terminology work will be completed in Canvas, but you may occasionally be required to login to Blackboard. 

Attendance

Late / Make-up Work Policy and Classroom Ethics 

Late work is defined as any work not turned in on the class day it is due (not including make-up work  due to absence). As per the Local Board Policy-students with a required excused absence note will  be given the number of days missed plus two additional days to turn in make-up work for a grade.  Due dates for assignments will be posted on the Med Term calendar. Please let me know if you’ve  been absent and are behind on assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain missing  assignments from me (or a substitute teacher in my absence) and turn them in on time.
