Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.)  End-of-Course Outcomes:  Distinguish between normal and abnormal physiologic functions of all body systems; identify etiology, signs, and symptoms of diseases of all body systems; and correlate the prognosis, medical treatment, and procedures with patient morbidity and mortality.

COURSE GOALS:
To develop an understanding of the human body in health and disease and to acquire an acceptable level of knowledge necessary to understand common diagnoses.  A knowledge of medical terminology will be of benefit.

Welcome to Pathophysiology!

Human Diseases provides students with a clear, concise understanding of basic disease information.

Through in-depth readings, flashcards, animations, videos, and games, students will study basic overviews of the most common diseases and conditions, along with new and emerging diseases, as well as a few rare conditions.

At the completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Describe basic disease concepts, including mechanisms of disease, neoplasms, inflammation, and infection

2. Examine the basic anatomy and physiology of the body systems, etiology of various diseases and conditions, important signs and symptoms of disorders, common diagnostics, typical course and management of disorders, preventive measures, and the effects of aging

3. Identify the terminology, etiology, signs and symptoms, common diagnostics, typical course and management of disorders, and preventive measures associated with genetic and developmental disorders, childhood diseases, and mental health disorders

4. Recognize important medical terminology related to the understanding of human diseases

5. State the drug classifications and examples of medications in each class used to treat diseases, disorders and conditions related to each body system

Expected Student Behavior

WITHDRAWING FROM A COURSE:
It is the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw  from a course.  Failure to officially withdraw may result in the student receiving a grade of “F” in the course.  The student may obtain a withdrawal form from his academic advisor, the counseling center or from the registrar’s office.  It is also the responsibility of the student to take the drop slip to the registrar’s office in order for the student to be officially dropped from a course.  The student may withdraw from a course online.  Students are not automatically dropped from their class roles as a result on non attendance.

STUDENT GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:
A student who has a problem with the course or the course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor.  If that is not successful, the student may appeal the decision of the instructor to the Program Director, the Dean of the Health Sciences Division, the Vice-President of Academic Affairs, and the President -- IN THAT ORDER.   Please refer to the current Amarillo College catalog for complete explanation of the grievance procedures.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Academic dishonesty shall constitute a violation of the college rules & regulations & is punishable as prescribed by Amarillo College Board policies.  Academic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion.  “Cheating on a test” shall include:

•    Copying from another student’s test paper.
•    Using test materials not authorized by the person administering the test.
•    Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test without permission from the test administrator/instructor.

•    Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of an administered/unadministered test.

•    Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for one’s self, to take a test.
•    Bribing another person to obtain an administered/unadministered test or information about an administered/unadministered test.

“Plagiarism” shall be defined as the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another’s work and the unacknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one’s own written work. 

“Collusion” shall be defined as the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work for fulfillment of course requirements.

EVALUATION METHOD:
Cengage Assignments:

•    Cengage assignments will be worth 20 % of your FINAL GRADE.  
•    No quiz or assignment grades will be dropped.

Discussion Board:  20% of your final grade.  You will have a weekly discussion board that you will need to post to and answer a post from a fellow student.

MAJOR EXAMS:
•    There will be 4 exams, 3 major exams and a final exam, given in this course. (subject to change)
•    These exams will be listed and available in the content folder with due dates.
•    All major exams will be taken on On-line including the final exam.  You will need to download and utilize Respondus in order to take your exams.
•    As you answer each question, the student must submit the answer and proceed to the next question.
•    When the student is finished with the exam, the student must submit the exam for grading.
•   
THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUPS GIVEN FOR ON-LINE EXAMS!


•    Major exams will be worth 40 % of the final grade.

There are NO makeups on missed exams.

FINAL EXAM:

•    You will have a COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM, WHICH IS WORTH 20% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE. 
•    THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE GIVEN ON-LINE THROUGH AC Online.
•    As you answer each question, the student must submit the answer and proceed to the next question.
•    When the student is finished with the Final exam, the student must submit the Final exam for grading.
•    The student will be able to see their Final exam score after the exam has been submitted for grading.
•    If the STUDENT misses the designated time for the FINAL EXAM, a grade of zero (0) will be given for the exam, unless an incomplete has been granted.
•    Arrangements to receive an incomplete "I" grade for the course must be made prior to the date of the final exam.  Incompletes are granted only for emergency situations such as hospitalization of the student, serious injury to the student on the day of the final exam, etc. 
•    Incompletes will not be granted for situations involving vacation plans, transportation difficulties, appointments, etc.
•    Students who need to request an incomplete must do so prior to the scheduled time of the final exam with appropriate documentation given to the instructor

Final grades will not be rounded in this course.

Grading Scale
A = 90.0 % - l00.0 %
B = 80.0 % -  89.9 %
C = 70.0 % -  79.9%
F = 69.9 % or less %

GRADING SUMMARY:
Cengage Assignments  =    20% of your final grade.

Discussion Board     =    20% of your final grade
Major Exams            =     40 % of your final grade.
Comp. Final              =     20 % of your final grade.
                                      

Mandatory Tutoring :  In an effort to increase retention in Allied Health courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory tutoring session with his/her instructor before taking the next exam. Before receiving a session, students must first schedule a time with the instructor. Mandatory sessions will be for 30 minutes.  THIS IS MANDATORY.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: 
You are expected to attend all class meetings of all courses for which you are registered. Regular attendance and regular class participation are significant factors that promote success in college. For online courses, attendance is determined by consistently logging in and accessing the course content and completing courses in accordance with the syllabus.

Week 1: Foundations of Disease (Unit 01)

Focus: Chapters 1-4 (50 activities)

  • Chapter 01: Introduction to Human Diseases

  • Chapter 02: Mechanisms of Disease

  • Chapter 03: Neoplasms

  • Chapter 04: Inflammation and Infection

Rationale: Establish foundational concepts before advancing to system-specific disorders. Approximately 12-13 activities per chapter.

 

Week 2: Early Body Systems

Focus: Chapters 5-7 (Approximately 45 activities)

  • Chapter 05: Immune System Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 06: Musculoskeletal System Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 07: Blood Diseases and Disorders

Rationale: Begin with immune system as it connects to foundational inflammation/infection concepts from Week 1.

 

Week 3: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems

Focus: Chapters 8-10 (Approximately 50 activities)

  • Chapter 08: Cardiovascular System Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 09: Respiratory System Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 10: Lymphatic System Diseases and Disorders

Rationale: Group interconnected circulatory and respiratory systems together for integrated understanding.

 

Week 4: Digestive, Hepatic, and Urinary Systems

Focus: Chapters 11-13 (Approximately 54 activities)

  • Chapter 11: Digestive System Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 12: Liver, Gallbladder, and Pancreatic Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 13: Urinary System Diseases and Disorders

Rationale: Connect digestive organs and elimination systems for comprehensive metabolic understanding.

 

Week 5: Regulatory and Sensory Systems

Focus: Chapters 14-18 (Approximately 54 activities)

  • Chapter 14: Endocrine System Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 15: Nervous System Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 16: Eye and Ear Diseases and Disorders

  • Chapter 17: Reproductive System Diseases and Disorders
