Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) For more information on Drop and Withdrawal Policies, please visit the Registrar's Office Web site.
The Amarillo College Privacy Policy is found at https://www.actx.edu/-amarillo-college-privacy-notice , and applies to all Amarillo College students. If you have questions about this privacy statement or you believe that your personal information has been released without your consent, send email to humanresources@actx.edu .
For-credit academic and workforce education courses offered at Amarillo College are limited to the course options available in the statewide inventory for two-year public institutions. Courses in the state-authorized lower-division Academic Course Guide Manual and Workforce Education Course Manual have specific descriptions that prescribe course content and may include specific student learning outcomes. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) maintains and regularly updates these manuals. Amarillo College faculty and leaders ensure that these courses are aligned with THECB guidelines and evaluated based on student performance outcomes. Students enrolled in these courses are expected to engage with and learn course content. According to the AC Board of Regents Policy Manual, "faculty members are entitled to academic freedom in the conduct of research and teaching and are tasked with the associated responsibilities" (DGC). Students are entitled to academic freedom in the classroom, as well, and faculty "must not attempt to force on students a personal viewpoint and must at all times allow diversity of opinion" (Amarillo College Academic Affairs Manual).

On Campus Course
Learning through the use of handwritten notes are now a requirement of the Respiratory Care program. Students will no longer be allowed to use a laptop or a tablet with a keyboard to type their notes during lectures and labs. Tablets with an electronic writing device will be allowed for taking handwritten notes as long as Airplane mode is enabled so the user is unable to receive notifications of any kind.
Reasoning: According to Van der Weel and Van der Meer (2024), students enrolled in healthcare programs across a variety of educational institutions demonstrated that handwritten note taking improved understanding, retention, and clinical reasoning better than students who utilized typing for note taking. Learning skills such as retention and reasoning are critically necessary for blood gas interpretation, ventilator management, and patient assessment which are deeply dependent on the understanding of the material and the pattern recognition that handwriting supports. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2023.1219945
End-of-Course Outcomes: Utilize respiratory care equipment; perform therapeutic procedures including oxygen therapy, humidity and aerosol therapy, lung expansion therapy, bronchial hygiene therapy, and pulse oximetry; recommend modification of therapy; and maintain patient records.

Activities
There will be no exemptions from section or final exams and the student will not be permitted to access exams after completion.
Testing Procedure
Exams will be administered using Respondus Lockdown Browser to ensure exam integrity.
Prior to any exam, students must wait in the testing center quietly and not be disruptive and noisy as other students may be testing or studying in this area. Once testing has begun, students will not be allowed to leave the testing room for any reason. After completion of a major exam, the student must leave the testing center and will not be allowed to wait for another student(s) to finish testing.
A calculator may be used for exams and will be provided in the Respondus Lockdown Browser toolbar.
Make-up policy
The opportunity to make-up missed tests and turn in assignments will be decided on an individual basis by the instructor. The exam must be taken within 1 week and the maximum grade that can be earned is 75%. Makeup exams may be different from the exam given on the scheduled day. There will be no make-up offered for the final exam, lab practical or quizzes.
Lab Exercises & Homework Assignments
Lab exercises & homework assignments are intended to enhance learning the course material and to prepare for exams. Lab exercises and homework assignments will be due on a specified date. Late work will be accepted on a case-by-case basis. The student will have 1 week after the lab exercise is graded to improve the score with a maximum grade of 85%. Interactive sessions may be held to "go over" the answers and to give the opportunity to ask questions. The points earned from simulation, homework and lab exercises will not be added into the student's course grade average unless the student has earned at least a 74.5% average on exams and quizzes.
Simulation Lab
The simulation lab is for testing and there will be a reasonable time limit on all simulations. Absolutely no teaching regarding technique will be done. Questions may be asked about the situation. Each simulation is worth 10 points and all sims must be passed to pass the course. Each sim may be attempted up to 3 times, however every attempt after the initial will have a maximum score of 7.5.
| It will be necessary to spend time in the laboratory outside of class time to complete all laboratory assignments and simulations. All simulations must be successfully completed by Tuesday, 4:00 pm in the week preceding finals. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS! |
|---|
Grades given in the simulation lab are based on subjective and objective criteria. Students should never expect to receive a perfect score in the simulation lab. Clinical instructors are well trained on the expectations for performance in the simulation lab and assign grades based on your performance as a student in an entry-to-practice program and not your prior experience working in any other health-related field. The procedures and techniques learned in Respiratory Care are unique to the profession and unlike any other medical profession or practice.
Remediation Policy
Mandatory tutoring in the West Campus Student Success Center (WCB Building) will be required when a test is failed. The student will obtain a “prescription” for tutoring from the instructor and return proof of the tutoring session to the instructor when tutoring is complete. The student must complete the prescribed tutoring to be eligible to take the next exam.
The instructor may meet with students who do not pass exams for mandatory remediation. Both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered on the test. The plan may include, but not be limited to:
Mandatory remediation of an exam will be a group event at a date/time set by the instructor. Failure to arrive on time and complete the a remediation meeting at the set date/time will result in additional negative points (-10 points) for that exam.
Faculty Texting and Phone Policy
Faculty will reply to emails on school days between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, and as I check my email after hours. I may also be available by text or phone after hours but please be courteous of my personal time. I will respond in a time that fits my personal, after hours schedule. Any calls or texts after 9:00 pm will be silenced and I will respond as soon as I access my phone.
Other
Additional assignments may also be given and points may be earned by the student for completion of the assignment.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 75 - 79
F = 0 - 74
Keep in mind that grades are not given. Grades are EARNED based on student performance. Often the instructor plays no role in the grading process other than recording. Please be careful to note the requirements for earning the grade you desire and act accordingly throughout the semester.
SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY
Every member of the Amarillo College community is expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. All work submitted for credit is expected to be the student’s own work. Amarillo College may initiate disciplinary proceedings against a student or program applicant accused of scholastic dishonesty. While specific examples are listed below, this is not an exhaustive list, and scholastic dishonesty may encompass other conduct, including any misconduct through electronic or computerized means. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, one (1) or more of the following acts:
Any time a class is missed, it is the student's responsibility to obtain notes from classmates. The instructor will be happy to discuss any information from the class, but the instructor's lecture notes are not available for copying.
To minimize absences, student may earn points that will affect the final course grade. Every time the student earns four (4) points, the final course grade will be dropped one (1) letter grade. Points are earned as follows:
| Missing an entire lecture & lab = 1 point Missing an entire lecture class = 1/2 point Missing an entire laboratory = 1/2 point Arriving late** to lecture or lab = 1/2 point |
**The student is "Late" to class if the student is not in their seat when class begins. |
A student who plans to succeed in this course should also plan to regularly attend all lecture and laboratory sessions. Cases of excessive tardiness and absence will be handled on an individual basis and will require a counseling session. Following this session, a departmental counseling form will be placed in your file. The purpose of this form is to document that the student has been made aware that excessive absences are jeopardizing successful completion of this course.

Grievance Procedure
As a student enrolled in a professional degree program, professionalism is expected at all times. Students who have a grievance over any aspect of the course must meet with the instructor in private to discuss the issue. At no point is it appropriate, nor professional, for a student to openly discuss a grievance during class, lab, or clinicals with other students, college faculty, or clinical staff. This type of behavior will be addressed swiftly and on an individual basis. If the problem is not resolved with the instructor, the student may proceed to the Program Director (Becky Byrd), then to the Dean of Health Professions (Kim Boyd), in that order.
