AI Statement

Collusion is defined as “the unauthorized collaboration with another person or by any other means, including artificial intelligence (AI) and computer translators, in preparing work for fulfillment of course requirements.” Using AI like (ChatGPT or Google Gemini) to create a document is considered colluding. The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence on specific assignments is at the discretion of the instructor.

Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Statement on State-Authorized Courses at Amarillo College

For-credit academic and workforce education courses offered at Amarillo College are limited to the course options available in the statewide inventory for two-year public institutions. Courses in the state-authorized lower-division Academic Course Guide Manual and Workforce Education Course Manual have specific descriptions that prescribe course content and may include specific student learning outcomes. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) maintains and regularly updates these manuals. Amarillo College faculty and leaders ensure that these courses are aligned with THECB guidelines and evaluated based on student performance outcomes. Students enrolled in these courses are expected to engage with and learn course content. According to the AC Board of Regents Policy Manual, "faculty members are entitled to academic freedom in the conduct of research and teaching and are tasked with the associated responsibilities" (DGC). Students are entitled to academic freedom in the classroom, as well, and faculty "must not attempt to force on students a personal viewpoint and must at all times allow diversity of opinion" (Amarillo College Academic Affairs Manual).

EDUC-1301-010 Introduction to the Teaching Profession

Prerequisites

Course Description

An enriched, integrated pre-service course and content experience that provides active recruitment and institutional support of students interested in a teaching career, especially in high need fields. The course provides students with opportunities to participate in early field observations at all levels of P-12 schools with varied and diverse student populations and provides students with support from college and school faculty, preferably in small cohort groups, for the purpose of introduction to and analysis of the culture of schooling and classrooms. Course content should be aligned as applicable with State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities standards; and the course must include a minimum of 16 contact hours of field experience in P-12 classrooms.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 

• Identify current issues influencing the field of education and teacher professional development.
• Analyze the culture of schooling and classrooms from the perspectives of language, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and disability-based academic diversity and equity. 
• Provide examples from classroom observations and course activities that demonstrate an understanding of educational pedagogy and the professional responsibilities of teachers. 
• Evaluate personal motivations, educational philosophies, and factors related to educational career decision-making. 
• Recognize the various multiple intelligences/learning styles in order to be able to implement instructional practices that meet the needs of all students.

Expected Student Behavior

1. Professionalism:  You are an AC student enrolled in a future teacher Educator Preparation Program (EPP).  Proper grammar and punctuation are always expected when communicating with the instructor. Text lingo and incomplete sentences are not acceptable.
2. Active Learner:  Take part in the course regardless of the setting.  You are responsible for due dates.  Please look at your learning as professional growth, not just a grade!
3. The AC Academic Success Centers are here to help you in person and virtually!  Visit their website to set up a time.  
4. Tutoring is assigned to any student whose overall course performance falls below 75%. Please see the Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy above for more information. 
5. Proactive: Be proactive in situations rather than reactive.  Please promptly let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Use your Blackboard Calendar to stay organized.
6. Academic Integrity:  Work honestly for your benefit.  Make sure all required signatures are from valid, certified personnel.  Ensure you provide proper citations for the work of others, including AI.
7. Artificial Intelligence (AI) NEVER replaces YOU!  However, you may use AI as a resource and/or tool for your development as an educator.  When AI impacts your ability to think critically, you are NOT using it as a resource and/or tool, and it defeats the purpose of the course!
   • You will earn a zero on any assignment or portion of an assignment that is not properly cited using APA formatting.  When you use AI, it MUST be cited… (AI Generator Used, topic, date generated)
   • Example: (ChatGPT, classroom management, February 11, 2023).
8. When completing Video assignments in the course, please 
   • Make sure you are presenting professionally.  Consider your environment, dress code, and use of professional language.
   • When presenting, do not read straight from your notes.  You may use prompts/notes to guide the response; however, your language should be conversational and engaging.
   • Follow the specific instructions for the lesson given by your instructor.
9. Observation Hours: Completing and verifying the 16-hour observation log sheet and journal is mandatory to receive credit for this course.  The start/end dates for observations will be discussed online in class. 
   • When observing:  Wear some form of identification.  You represent Amarillo College and yourself; be professional and dress professionally.  Be gracious to the educators who allow you to observe in their classroom.  DO NOT use technology of any kind during your observation.  Take anecdotal notes with a pencil and paper.  
   • As part of this course, a criminal background check will be required to complete the 16 hours of observation.  As a student observer, you understand and agree that you must provide a driver's license or state ID card, a social security number, and a date of birth to facilitate the background check.  
   • If you are observing in Amarillo ISD, Canyon ISD, or Hereford ISD, you will be assigned an observation teacher.  All other school districts will require you to contact the school and set those up.  More information will be provided in Blackboard.

Blackboard Learning Activities = 25% of Final Grade
Projects =  10% of Final Grade

A =100-90
B = 89-80
C = 79-70
D = 69-65
F =  64-0

Late Work 

• All assignments are due on or before the listed due date. Late work is accepted within 7 days of the original due date, but the maximum score you can earn is 70%. After 7 days, the assignment will remain a zero in the gradebook and will not be accepted. Note: the 7-day late policy does not apply to your final.

Course Failure Policies

You will receive an F for the course if:

• You do not complete the required observation hours and journal assignments, or
• A cooperating teacher files a formal complaint about your behavior during observations

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

• You are permitted to use AI as a learning tool to support your growth as an educator. However, AI should never replace your own thinking. If you are relying on AI instead of developing your own critical thinking skills, you are not using it appropriately for this course.
• Citation requirement: Any use of AI must be cited in APA format. Assignments or portions of assignments that use AI without proper citation will receive a zero. Use this format when citing AI: (AI Tool Name, topic, date generated) Example: (ChatGPT, classroom management, February 11, 2023)

Video Assignments

When completing video assignments, follow these requirements:

• Professionalism: Present yourself professionally. Be mindful of your appearance, your surroundings, and the language you use.
• Delivery: Do not read directly from your notes. You may use brief prompts to guide you, but your delivery should sound natural and engaging.
• Instructions: Follow your instructor's specific directions for each video assignment.
• Deadlines: Late video submissions and late peer reviews are not accepted under any circumstances. Plan ahead.

Attendance

Since this is an online course, attendance is measured by completing assigned work in Blackboard. Modules typically open Tuesday morning and close Monday at 11:59 PM, so all coursework for each module is due by Monday at 11:59 PM. See the course calendar below for specific due dates.

If an emergency prevents you from submitting work on time, email your instructor immediately. For details on late work, refer to the Grading Criteria section of this syllabus.

Observation Guidelines

Observing in a real classroom is one of the most valuable parts of this course. It gives you hands-on insight into teaching and helps you begin building the skills you'll need as an educator. You are required to complete 16 hours of observation in a public school setting to receive credit for this course.

Professionalism

You represent both yourself and Amarillo College during your observation hours. Students, teachers, and school staff will see you as a role model, so professional behavior is expected at all times. Take this responsibility seriously.

Planning Ahead

These 16 hours require advance planning. Before scheduling your observations, consider your work schedule, family obligations, and other commitments to avoid conflicts. Incomplete observation hours will affect your grade, so do not wait until the last minute.

Background Check Requirement

A criminal background check is required before you may begin observing in any school. To complete this process, you will need to provide:

• A valid driver's license
• Your Social Security number
• Your date of birth
