Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Fundamentals of engine operation, diagnosis and repair. Emphasis on identification, inspection, measurements, disassembly, repair and reassembly of the engine. May be taught manufacturer specific.

 WECM End-of-Course Outcomes:  Utilize safety procedures; explain engine operating principles; demonstrate engine diagnostic procedures; and repair cylinder head, valve train, block assembly, lubrication, and cooling systems.

General: Engine Diagnosis; Removal and Reinstallation (R&R)

  • Complete work order to include customer information, vehicle identifying information, customer concern, related service history, cause, and correction.  (P-1)

  • Research applicable vehicle and service information, including fluid type, internal engine operation, vehicle service history, service precautions, and technical service bulletins.     (P-1)

  • Verify operation of the instrument panel engine warning indicators.  (P-1)

  • Inspect engine assembly for fuel, oil, coolant, and other leaks; determine needed action.  (P-1)

  • Install engine covers using gaskets, seals, and sealers as required.  (P-1)

  • Verify engine mechanical timing.  (P-1)

  • Perform common fastener and thread repair, to include: remove broken bolt, restore internal and external threads, and repair internal threads with thread insert.  (P-1)

Cylinder Head and Valve Train Diagnosis and Repair

  • Remove cylinder head; inspect gasket condition; install cylinder head and gasket; tighten according to manufacturers' specification and procedure.  (P-1)

  • Clean and visually inspect a cylinder head for cracks; check gasket surface areas for warpage and surface finish; check passage condition.  (P-1)

  • Adjust valves (mechanical or hydraulic lifters).  (P-1)

  • Inspect and replace camshaft and drive belt/chain; includes checking drive gear wear and backlash, end play, sprocket and chain wear, overhead cam drive sprocket(s), drive belt(s), belt tension, tensioners, camshaft reluctor ring/tone-wheel, and valve timing components; verify correct camshaft timing.  (P-1)

Engine Block Assembly Diagnosis and Repair

  • Remove, inspect, and/or replace crankshaft vibration damper (harmonic balancer).  (P-2)

Lubrication and Cooling Systems Diagnosis and Repair

  • Perform cooling system pressure and dye tests to identify leaks; check coolant condition and level; inspect and test radiator, pressure cap, coolant recovery tank, heater core, and galley plugs; determine needed action.  (P-1)

  • Inspect, replace, and/or adjust drive belts, tensioners, and pulleys; check pulley and belt alignment.    (P-1)

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required to comply with the Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct. The Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct will be posted on the bulletin board in the Transportation Career Center and the Academic Classroom Center and will be explained in detail by the Instructor on the first day of class.

Cell phone or electronic equipment in the classroom or lab should be put on silent and not interfere with the classroom environment.

Late work will  not be accepted  after due date.

If you have a 90% average and miss zero classes you will be excempt from the final exam 

Attendance

You are expected to attend all class meetings on time and stay for the whole class. Points will be deducted from your attendance and participation for not complying.

Three tardies ( more than ten minutes after the start of class or leaving before class is concluded) equal an absence.

Ten points will be deducted from your final grade for each absence.
