The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) MATH-1325-001 Calculus for Business & Social Sciences
Prerequisite: MATH 1316, 1324, or 1414 - minimum grade of C or Department Chair consent
This course is the basic study of limits and continuity, differentiation, optimization and graphing, and integration of elementary functions, with emphasis on applications in business, economics, and social sciences. This course is not a substitute for MATH 2313 or 2413, Calculus I.

Graphing Calculator: You are required to bring your calculator to EVERY class. A TI-84 Plus calculator is preferred and will be used by the instructor. No calculators with logic or factoring capabilities are allowed (TI-89, nspire). Students unable to purchase a graphing calculator can apply to the Adult Students Program for the privilege of checking one out for the semester.
Access to a working computer with internet access and a printer. There are student computers located in the Academic Success Center - Math and Ware Student Commons for student use. This enables you to access the course in Blackboard and the online homework found at www.mymathlab.com.

Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to be on time and prepared for class daily. Students should participate in class in a positive manner. Using foul language in emails or discussions will not be tolerated and may result in possible removal from the course. You are expected to express yourself with courtesy and consideration at all times. Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action.
Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism: Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper, copying from the homework solutions manual, or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz. Any student caught cheating on an assignment will receive a grade of zero for the assignment. If a student is caught cheating on a test, a grade of zero will be assigned with no chance of replacing the grade.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.
Daily Homework: Daily homework will consist of online assignments submitted using MyMathLab and will be automatically graded on the website. Details on how to register and enroll in MyMathLab will be given in class. Assignment deadlines will be indicated in MyMathLab with each homework set. I do not accept late homework. (To allow for missed assignments, the 1 lowest online homework grade will be dropped.)
Portfolio Problems: Portfolio problems will consist of completing written assignments covering the concepts we have discussed in lecture. Usually these problems require a deeper understanding of the basic concepts and students must apply critical thinking skills. Portfolio assignments will be submitted in google classroom and graded by the instructor. Detailed instructions on format for portfolio assignments will be given in class and posted in Blackboard. Assignment deadlines will be announced as material is covered. I do not accept late portfolio assignments.
Exams: Four exams will be given on MyMathLab. Due dates will be posted in Blackboard and in MyMathLab. Exams are to be taken individually, no "team testing." See the section on "cheating and plagiarism" for consequences of cheating (team testing). At the end of the semester, if your average is less than 70 or you did not complete an exam, you will be required to retake the missed exam on MyMathLab. If your average is higher than 70 but you wish to improve your grade, you will also be given the opportunity to retake your lowest exam on MyMathLab. However, if your average is 70 or above AND you are content with your grade, you will not be required to retake any unit exam.
In accordance with Mathematics Department policy, students scoring below a 70 on any major exam will be required to spend at least one hour in the Academic Success Center - Math. This must be completed by the time specified by your instructor.
Your course average (A 90-100, B 80 - 89, C 70 - 79, D 60 - 69, F Below 60) will be calculated using the following scale:

I DO NOT give extra credit work and late work is not accepted.
Attendance will be taken every day at varying times during class. You are allowed to miss one day without penalty. For every absence after the first, 5 points will be deducted for your attendance grade.
The deadline to drop this course is June 24. To complete the drop process, you must submit your drop form to me by noon on June 24 and submit it to the Registrar that day before 5pm. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.
Note: Late drops will NOT be given under any circumstance.

Food/Drink: It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department for food and drink to be allowed in the classroom setting at the instructor's discretion.
Phones/Pagers/Ear Buds/Headphones: It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that cell phones and pagers must be turned off or on silent mode in the classrooms and the computer labs. All ear buds and headphones must also be removed and turned off during class. During testing, phones must be stored out of sight and in silent mode. If a student answers a call during a test, the test will be collected and graded with no further work being done.
Pictures/Videos: Students are not allowed to take pictures or videos of the instructor's work without instructor consent.
