Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) For more information on Drop and Withdrawal Policies, please visit the Registrar's Office Web site.

Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated. The Amarillo College Student Rights and Responsibilities Publication states, "Scholastic dishonesty” includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and collusion. Students will also be required to abide by the Student Code of Conduct found in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Publication referenced above.
***Abusive, vulgar, lewd, or profane speech will not be tolerated***
Student success will be assessed in 3 learning domains.
Failure of any ONE domain constitutes failure of the ENTIRE class.
Cognitive | Psychomotor | Affective |
Criterion: A final grade of "C" or higher |
Criterion: Failure of any single skill more than 2 times will constitute failure of this class |
Criterion: The student must have “Competent” ratings, maintained throughout, in all categories of the Professional Behavior Evaluation form |
Performance: 614 possible course points Note: In Platinum, 1 cut score point/percent = 1 point in Blackboard's gradebook on EXAMS. QUIZ cut scores are 1/10th of the Platinum Score. Examples: a Platinum EXAM cut score of 85 is 85 points in the gradebook. A Quiz/PALS cut score of 85 = 8.5 points in Blackboard Quizzes (5) & PALS (3) = 88 points possible (Closed Book)
Grading scale: A = 552.6 points B = 491.2 points C = 429.8 points F = 429.7 and below Students should NOT expect decimal grade rounding. |
Performance: Regular attendance is mandatory for successful completion of this course All Platinum work covered during the semester must be satisfactorily completed, approved, and submitted prior to the end of the semester.
Note: Skills examinations will be administered as laboratory practical exams. All skills exams must be performed to a level deemed satisfactory by the skills examiner. The skills examiner will use the criteria from the Texas Department of State Health Services, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and program accreditation standards to evaluate skills performance. |
Performance Categories:
Note: Specific details for each category provided the first class meeting |
ONLINE ATTENDANCE:
Regular attendance is necessary for successful completion of this course. The overall attendance policy is outlined in the Advanced Student Handbook provided to each student and is accomplished through discussion board participation, quizzes, exams, and classroom lab sessions. However, participation is critical to grades. Therefore attendance issues will affect your class grade as described below:
"Absences" from the online portion of this class result in missed cut-off dates and the subsequent inability to make up the lost grades! NOTE: Once an assignment is available (opened) to the student, papers, quizzes, exams, etc. can be turned in at any time PRIOR to the cut-off date/time.
Ample time has been given to complete assignments.Last minute scrambles to get things done are not wise time management practices for online courses. Be absolutely certain you understand: ONCE A UNIT IS CLOSED, late submissions will not be accepted! SCORES OF "0" (zero) WILL BE AWARDED.
Because of the built-in flexibility of online courses, exceptions to this policy are difficult to imagine. In a nut shell, TAKE A DISCIPLINED, MANAGED APPROACH to the time you commit to this course, and you will be well on your way to achieving your goals.
LABORATORY ATTENDANCE:
This is a HYBRID online course, meaning a lab component is associated with the course. As such:
Again, this class is a hybrid online course. Failure to successfully complete either the online, or lab portions of this course will result in an "F" for the entire course.
This semester is broken down into 4 two-week units, 1 three-week unit, and a "Finals" week (12 total weeks)
Unit 1: Volume 2: Chapter 46, Patient's with Spec. Challenges
Unit 2: Volume 2: Chapter 45, Geriatric Emergencies
Unit 3: Volume 2: Chapters 42, Obstetrics
Unit 4: Volume 2: Chapter 43, Neonatal Care
Unit 5: Volume 2: Chapter 44, Pediatric Emergencies
PROGRAM MEDICAL DIRECTOR: Dr. Darrell Morgan, M.D.
DEAN OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION: David Hall, M.A.
INSTRUCTOR: Wade Olsen, M.Ed., LP, NRP
MAKE-UP POLICY:
This is extremely important: PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE BEGINNING AND ENDING DATES listed under the "calendar" tab associated with this course on "Blackboard"; especially the ending times. These are hard, cut-off points and will NOT be extended!
Also, Quizzes (excluding PALS) and Exams can only be taken 1 (one) time and all have time limits. Be certain you will not be interrupted prior to taking them. If you are, your grade will reflect the point you exited the test or time expired. Quizzes and Exams are to be taken Closed Book.
DO NOT GET BEHIND!!! You cannot go back to catch up. Frankly put, NO MAKE-UP opportunities are available for quizzes, exams, or closed discussion boards! Remember though, all assignments can be submitted at any time during their scheduled availability.
Discussion assignments, posted after the due date, will also incur a TEN PERCENT GRADE REDUCTION PER DAY with this caveat: ONCE THE UNIT ENDS, NO FURTHER POSTINGS ARE POSSIBLE. THE UNIT'S DISCUSSION LINK WILL BE DISABLED! This policy is therefore dependent on the amount of time left in each unit. This means, for example, that a late Discussion Response, which always comes due at the end of each unit, has no grade reduction opportunity: Zero points will be awarded!
WITHDRAWING FROM A COURSE:
It is the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw from a course. Failure to officially withdraw will result in a grade of "F" in the course. Students are not automatically dropped from their class roster as a result of nonattendance. An email to the instructor expressing your desire to drop is required.
NOTE: The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule §4.10.
STUDENT GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:
A student who has a problem with the course or the course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor. If that is not successful, the student may appeal the decision of the instructor to the Program Director, the appropriate Dean, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the President - IN THAT ORDER.
COURSE SCHEDULE AND OBJECTIVES:
A detailed schedule showing the chapters to be covered for each session will be made available to the students. This schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. You are responsible for the lesson objectives at the beginning of each chapter.
Exceptions to the policies and procedures outlined in this syllabus will be dealt with on an individual basis at the discretion of the instructor.
