Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. Course Description

Basic Spanish language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing within a cultural framework. Students will acquire the vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary to communicate and comprehend at the beginner level.

The digital textbook Vistas 6th Edition (published by Vista Higher Learning) will be used. Students purchase an access code from the Amarillo College Bookstore: ISBN 978-1-54330-639-2, Supersite Plus Code (w/ WebSAM + vText + Practice App). This book will be used for Spanish 1411, 1412 and 2311, so, if the student takes those courses at AC within 36 months, no additional purchase will be necessary.

It is the student's choice if he/she wants to buy the hard-bound textbook. Keep in mind that all the information needed is found online, the hard-back book is not required, but many students find it helpful to have a book in hand. You may ask the bookstore for that option.

Students need to have speakers or a headset to listen to audio portions of various assignments. The student's computer is REQUIRED to have a microphone to record your voice and a camera in order to videochat live with classmates for partner videospeaking assignments.

Student Performance

Tests, Assignments and Partner Work:

In addition to writing and listening, some assignments require students to video or record themselves speaking in Spanish. Additionally, students will be required to partner with classmates (via live partner chat on the VHL website) for many assignments to practice speaking in a natural, real-life context and for tests to demonstrate their speaking abilities. The instructor will assign partners on the second day of classes via email if needed. Students may partner with classmates of their choice if they choose, or Alyssah, our tutor, or their high school teacher. 

Students are required to take all tests at school while being proctored by their high school teacher/facilitator or other approved proctor unless written permission is given otherwise by Instructor Barton.

Department Tutoring Policy:

If a student scores below 70% on an exam or writing assignment, he or she will be required to attend tutoring per the instructor’s directions before being allowed to complete the next assigned work.

The course is based on the text listed above. You are responsible for the assignments in each chapter and should review the material indicated on or before the indicated dates.

Expected Student Behavior

Partner Chat:

Learning how to speak Spanish is a main focus of this course. Therefore, students are REQUIRED to partner with classmates via live partner chat on the VHL website to practice the concepts being taught in each chapter.

Academic Honesty:

Students are responsible for adhering to the highest standard of behavior when it comes to honesty and plagiarism. A student who engages in scholastic dishonesty which includes but is not limited to cheating, copying and pasting answers from any source, plagiarism, the use of online translators, and collusion, will receive an F for this course. Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. STUDENTS WHO ARE GUILTY OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY FACE THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPULSION FROM AMARILLO COLLEGE. THIS WILL BE PERMANENTLY ON THE STUDENTS TRANSCRIPT, WITH LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES INTO THE FUTURE, BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY.

Students are required to take all tests at school while being proctored by their high school teacher/facilitator or other approved proctor unless written permission is given otherwise by Instructor Barton. ALL TESTS AND QUIZZES ARE TO BE TAKEN CLOSED BOOK. NO HELP FROM ANYONE OR ANY RESOURCE. All students must sign an honor statement, swearing they will not cheat on any assignment or test.

Grading Criteria

Grade Book:

GRADES ARE POSTED DAILY ON DO NOT LOOK AT BLACKBOARD FOR YOUR GRADE until the end of the semester during finals week when grades are transferred from to Blackboard. Whatever your grade is on IS your grade.


Your grade will be weighted according to the following criteria:

Assignments  = 40%

Speaking Assignments = 15%

Tests and quizzes = 45% 

Assignments and Grades:

The assigned homework assignments, tests and quizzes are accessed and submitted through (NO assignments or tests are found on Blackboard) and need to be completed by a certain date. They are a combination of listening, speaking, reading, writing, fill-in-the blank, multiple choice and T/F exercises, a vocabulary quiz, and at the end of each chapter, a comprehensive test. Capital letters, punctuation and accents count! The homework assignments may be done three (3) times so that the student may learn the material more thoroughly and achieve the desired grade. Students may seek help when completing homework assignments as needed, but the use of any type of copying and pasting, translator, online or otherwise, is strictly prohibited on all work. Homework assignments (not tests) may be completed at any time before the due date. The tests are timed (10 minutes for vocabulary quizzes and 30 minutes for lesson tests) and may be taken only once. Tests may be taken as early as two (2) days before the due date. ALL TESTS ARE TO BE TAKEN CLOSED BOOK. NO OUTSIDE HELP.  Students are strongly urged to keep up with the assignments by working AHEAD of the schedule at least one or two days.Tests completed late will be NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR CREDIT. Daily assignments may be submitted one day late with a 33% penalty, two days late with a 66% penalty, three days late with 99% penalty, and no credit given after four days.

The standard ten-point spread is used to determine the letter grade received:

90 –100 =  A

80 – 89  =  B

70 –79   =  C  

60 – 69  =  D

below 60 = F

There is no extra credit in this course.

There are many assignments not marked as a required assignment in the content for each chapter. These assignments would prove extremely helpful if worked by students. The more assignments you complete, the better you will understand grammatical concepts as well as spoken Spanish.

There will be no make-ups for missed tests. If there is a one-time, extenuating circumstance, such as a death in the family or hospitalization of the student or a member of his/her immediate family, please advise the instructor immediately, who will make a case-by-case judgment call. 

Computer or technical difficulties are no excuse for missing assignments or tests, so, keep a close eye on the calendar of assignments so that you do not miss any deadlines. Take care of computer repair/problems promptly. No late tests will be accepted unless there is an extreme, extenuating one-time circumstance, such as a death in the family or hospitalization of the student or a member of his/her immediately family. 


As this is an asynchronous on-line class, there will be no attendance taken for Amarillo College. However, if you are in high school, you must abide by your school's attendance policy. Notwithstanding AC's no-attendance policy, all assignments must be completed and submitted by the due date or students will receive late penalties for assignments and 0 credit for tests regardless of whether or not your high school holds classes on that day. This class is on Amarillo College's schedule, NOT your high school's schedule. 


All assignments are listed on the calendar of assignments on the website and below. All assignments are due on the date indicated on the VHL calendar whether or not your school holds classes that day. All assignments must be submitted by 11:59 pm Central Time on the due date and all tests and quizzes must be submitted by 3:59 pm Central Time. If you are in a high school class, you must take the test in the presence of your teacher or an authorized proctor. Pay close attention to the calendar, as no late tests are accepted (unless there is an extreme, extenuating circumstance such as the student becomes ill with COVID, or is hospitalized, or has a baby, or there was a death in the family; judgment calls will be made on a case-by-case basis, and she must be contacted immediately) and daily assignments submitted one day late receive a 33% penalty, 66% penalty on the second day, 99% penalty on the third day. All assignments (not tests) may be completed and submitted any time before the due date. Tests may be taken up to two (2) days before the due date (giving you a three-day window).
