Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisites

Prerequisite: Audition or instructor consent

Course Description

One 30-minute lesson per week, minimum three hours of outside practice per week required. For music majors, in their minor area of performance. Emphasis on development of technique, musicianship, and repertoire; performance opportunities in student recitals.

Student Performance

A functional piano proficiency examination is required of all majors prior to graduation. Students achieving a “B” or better in each class piano class (levels I,II and Piano Minor I, II) are exempt from taking the exam. All music majors will enroll in the piano sequence. “Piano Minor II” culminates in the proficiency examination. Students with a background in keyboard will be placed at the appropriate level as determined by the piano instructor. 

Requirements:

1. All Major and Minor scales with proper fingering and chord progressions

2. Harmonization and Transposition

3. A memorized solo piece

4. 2-part or 3-part Choral Reading

5. Accompanying piece or duet

In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to practice 3 to 5 hours per week, evenly divided throughout the days of the week.  They are expected to be on time for their scheduled lessons, and to show consistent improvement weekly by thorough preparation of assigned material.

Grading Criteria

 

Completion of the above 5 items for the proficiency 5x10=50%

Piano Recital Attendance Performance 10%

6 Friday Performance class 6x5=30%

Upload the 5 items of the proficiency into google drive folder and share with Mrs. Nies and Dr. Lin. 10%

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.  Miss more than 5 lessons will result in F grade.

Pianos are available for individual practice in the following areas:

Piano Lab, Room 203:  12 Electronic pianos, with headsets, available outside of scheduled class times.

Practice Rooms:  Concert Hall south hallway.  Any unlocked, open rooms with pianos are available for individual practice.
