Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) MUAP-1188-002 Independent Study


Course Description

One 30-minute lesson per week, minimum three hours of outside practice per week required. Emphasis on basic technique and musicianship, with appropriate literature tailored to the needs/desires of the individual student.

Required texts and other course materials will be determined in conference with the student.

These may include books, scores, and recordings.  


Depending on the nature of the project, the student may be required to provide (or gain access to) staff paper, music notation software software, writing utensils, word processor, printer, portable electronic storage device, etc.

Student Performance

The Independent Study topic will be mutually agreed upon by the instructor and the student at the beginning of the semester.  Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • conducting (choral and/or instrumental)
  • jazz improvisation
  • music composition
  • advanced theory and analysis
  • advanced ear training and sight reading

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to demonstrate improvement in the chosen topic area, as evaluated by the instructor.  

In lieu of a final examination, the student will submit a hard and/or electronic copy (at the discretion of the instructor) of the completed project, as well as an accompanying essay (at least 500 words typed) describing challenges, breakthroughs, and take-aways encountered in the course of the project.  The student should reference the process(es) they used to overcome obstacles to completion, and also reflect on interactions with the instructor.

The student will bring to each meeting clean work, an alert mind, and eager questions and observations. 

Grading Criteria


Syllabus Quiz  5%

Weekly Work  45%

Final Submission / Essay  50%

Students will be given a letter grade each week based on their performance and improvement from the previous week.  Factors considered will include attendance, attitude, demonstrated practice, and quality of work submitted.  The letter grades will be averaged with the syllabus quiz grade and final submission / essay grade to determine the final grade.  

Daily and final grades will be based on the following point scale:

A:  90-100

B:  80-89

C:  70-79

D:  60-69

F:  Below 60


Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.


Week 1:  Meet with instructor; discuss project and text requirements, receive first practice, writing, listening, and/or reading assignment.

Week 2:  Review previous week's assignments and re-evaluate trajectory of project.

Week 3 & Subsequent Weeks:  Each upcoming week’s assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week’s lesson.

Last week of the term:  By no later than midnight on Wednesday of exam week, turn in project and accompanying essay.  A performance of work resulting from the project may be arranged, if appropriate.
