Trigonometry 5th Edition, by Mark Dugopolski

Supplies

You will need a graphing calculator for this course. All demonstrations in class will be done on a TI-84 Plus. If you already own another graphing utility, check with me to see if it is appropriate for this course.  You will not be able to use a TI-89, TI-92, or TI-Nspire calculator on exams.  Students unable to afford the purchase of a graphing calculator can apply to check one out for the semester.  IT is a first come, first served, so bring a copy of your schedule as soon as possible to the Adult Students Program, Student Services Center, Room 130, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

You will need a MyMathLab Access Code to access the online homework program.  In addition to the online homework, if you do not want to buy a hard copy of the textbook, you can use this program to access the an electronic copy of the textbook.

You will need access to a working computer with internet access and a printer. There are student computers located in the AC Library and the Math Outreach Center for student use. This enables you to access the course in Blackboard.

You will also need an Amarillo College student I.D. for testing and tutoring.

Student Performance

Learning Objectives:
After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

Students Rights and Responsibilities

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Log in using the AC Connect Portal

In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY:  Scholastic dishonesty (cheating) of any kind will not be tolerated in this course.  Cheating is defined in Webster’s College Dictionary as “taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers.”  Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper and using unauthorized sources of information while taking a test.  Participating in scholastic dishonesty will result in a non replaceable grade of zero on the assignment or exam involved.  Thus, if you are caught cheating on an exam, a grade of zero will be assigned with no chance of the final exam replacing that grade.  Further action at a higher level may be sought if necessary.  Scholastic dishonesty is clearly defined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities.  If you are caught with a cell phone out during an exam for ANY reason, you will receive an F for the course.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES: Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment.  Behaviors that are not supportive include but are not limited to:  tardiness/leaving early, electronic device noises, talking during lecture, abusive, offensive, or disrespectful language and/or demeanor toward AC faculty, staff, students and/or property.

In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered.  The state of Texas sets the requirements; therefore, this course will move at a pace to ensure that these requirements are met.  Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered.

Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to:  removal from the classroom, consultation with department chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

  1. BE ON TIME: Students need to be on time to every class meeting.  It is distracting and disrespectful to the class when you arrive late.  If you must be late, please take the seat nearest to the door.  If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be counted absent.
  2. BE PREPARED: Students need to have all homework completed and ready to discuss when class begins.
  3. NO DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR will be tolerated.  Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to the following:  cell phones (ringing or text messaging) and beepers, abusive language and/or behavior, talking while instructor is lecturing, sleeping, leaving class early, arriving late, and getting up during lecture to go to the trash can or restroom.
  4. SUBSTITUTE BEHAVIOR:  If a substitute should come in to teach the class, you are expected to be on your best behavior and treat him/her with the highest respect.    I would not send anyone in to teach who is not fully capable of doing so.

Grading Criteria

Your semester grade (90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, Below 60 F) will be determined as follows:

Homework 10%
Quizzes 10%
Major Exams 60%
Final Exam 20%

All grades will be posted on AC Connect under My Grades. Be aware that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, prohibits instructors from disclosing information regarding grades over the phone, via email, or to a third party. Thus, if you need to discuss your grade with me, you must do so in person or check online.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. If an absence occurs, the student is responsible for the information and assignments covered in class. Attendance will be taken during every class period.  If a student is more than 10 minutes late or leaves more than 10 minutes early, they will be counted absent.

Please remember the deadline for dropping this class is Thursday, June 23rd.  With AC’s drop policy, you are required to meet with your instructor and your advisor in order to drop.  You must contact the instructor no later than noon on the deadline date listed above.  If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.

The following assignments must be completed by Wednesday, May 25th in order to be considered Present in the course. Failure to complete all assignments by this date may lead to an administrative drop from the course.

  • Orientation to MML online homework assignment
  • Flipgrid Introduction video
  • Course Contract
  • Attendance in class

Signup for Remind.  See the announcements on Blackboard for more information. Your instructor will communicate important course updates, guidance, and hints via Remind.

Complete assignments by the scheduled date/time.  There is a "no late work" policy, except in extreme circumstances.

Attendance will be taken during each class period.  Excessive absence or lack of participation may result in failure of the course.

Students should plan on spending a minimum of 15 hours per week outside of class on this course. This time commitment is not an exaggeration. Actual amounts will vary depending on weekly assignments, topic complexity, and prior experience with the subject matter.

Due to the nature of this course and the volume of work required to master this material, schedule your time so that you are able to devote the appropriate energy and effort to achieve success in this course.

Your instructor, Mandi Wheeler, may be contacted via Remind or by email through the course in Blackboard. If Blackboard is not available, please email mandiwheeler@amarillocollege.com.  In-person meetings or additional help are available if needed or desired. In order to schedule a meeting outside of scheduled office hours, send a message via Remind or email to your instructor.

Emails are typically answered within 24 hours. If you do not receive a response within that timeframe, please resend your message as a reminder.

Additional Information

Homework

Your first homework assignment will be to create an introduction video on Flipgrid and respond to at least 1 classmate's video.  The details of this assignment are posted in the Assignments section on Blackboard.  The grade will be 80% for your video and 20% each for the response videos.

Homework will be assigned from each section once we have completed the section.  Typically, there will be two assignments for each section; written lab and MyMathLab homework.

The written lab assignments will be posted on the AC Connect website under Assignments. The labs are due at the beginning of the next class meeting via gradescope.com unless stated otherwise. If you have questions, you are encouraged to meet with me during my office hours or at a prearranged time. Note that late assignments will not be accepted. The two lowest lab grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.

The lab assignments must be done in pencil. Anything that is wrong or needs to be corrected must be cleanly erased. Do not write, doodle, or perform mathematical calculations in the margins. Homework must be neat and legible. I will be the judge as to what is neat and legible.  All work must be presented in an orderly manner with the problem running in a single column down the left half of the page. You use the right half of the page for graphs and drawings. Any problem (excluding graphs) with work presented in anything except the first column will not receive credit.

The online homework will be completed on MyMathLab (MML).  To register for the class, login to Blackboard and click on one of the MML links in the menu.  If you have use a Pearson MyLab or Mastering product before, login with your username and password.  If you have never used a Pearson MyLab or Mastering product, create a new account.  If you have an Access Code either bought standalone or packaged with a textbook, you can then enter the code.  Otherwise, you can buy an Access Code using a credit card or PayPal account.  If you need to wait until payday or a financial aid check, you can use the 14 day free access by clicking the link at the bottom of the payment page. The two lowest online homework grades will be dropped at teh end of the semester.

You are strongly encouraged to go to the Outreach Center if you feel you need extra help beyond meeting with me outside of class, or if you just want a place where you can do your homework and get help if you need it. The Outreach Center is located in Durrett Room 104 and is available virtually using the link on Blackboard.

Quizzes
We will have a quiz each class meeting. The quizzes will be a written quizzes that will be taken in the last 5 minutes of class.  The quizzes will generally be over trig function values and identities we have learned so far in the semester and will be completed without the help of a calculator.  The lowest written quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester.

Major Exams
Four exams will be given during the semester.  At least two will be taken in the Math Testing Center outside of class time.  Note that no makeup exams will be given. If a student misses an exam, the grade will be replaced with the final exam grade. If the student does not miss any exams during the semester, the final exam grade, if higher, will replace the lowest major exam grade. In the event of a take-home exam, absolutely no late work will be accepted.

You will be required to complete a test assignment in the Outreach Center if you score below a 70 on any major exam. This requirement must be fulfilled before the next exam. The Outreach Center is located in Durrett Room 104 and is available virtually using the link given in Blackboard. If you fail to meet this requirement, you will not be allowed to take the next exam.

Final Exam
A comprehensive final exam will be due by noon on the last class day.

Extra Credit
Outside the dropped homework assignments and quizzes and the replacement of the lowest exam, extra credit is not offered.

Phone

Cell phones must be turned off or in silent mode and OUT OF SIGHT while in the classrooms and the computer labs.
