Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) • Learn and gain mastery over the basic facts and research findings, terminology, principles, and theories important in the various areas of lifespan developmental psychology.
• Develop understanding, skills, and techniques for analyzing human behavior using a scientific approach.
• Gain a basic understanding of the interaction between genetic and environmental influences on human development.
• Gain a basic understanding of physical, cognitive, emotional and social development across the lifespan.
• Gain a basic understanding of family, school and work achievement, and death and dying as they apply to lifespan development.
• Analyze current issues and controversies in the field of developmental psychology.

Expected Student Behavior

This 3-hour course is a lecture style course.  Instruction in a lecture course is delivered through face-to-face contact. A portion of this course is completed outside of class. In class time involves lecture, discussions, activities, and in class participation.  The course is completed within 8 weeks. Course format will consist of the following:

• Meaning Mondays: definitional understanding
• Talk about It Tuesdays: Student led discussions
• Work with It Wednesdays: Activities for retention
• Think It Through Thursdays: Case studies connected to content

Grading Criteria

B = 89-80%

C = 79-70%

D = 69-60%

How are grades calculated?

 

• Let us say, for example, that you made the following grades in the course:
  • Quiz 1 = 82; Quiz 2 = 85; Quiz 3 = 93; Quiz 4 = 78
  • D1: 88; D1: 76; D3: 88; D4: 70; D5: 91; D6: 88; D7: 92; D8: 65
  • Reading Log / Discussion / Participation (10 total): 80 + 100 + 100 + 70 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 70 + 100 + 100
  • Service Learning Project = 100
  • Self-Directed Learning Project: 85
  • Final Exam: 83

 

• Here is how you would do the math:
  • Average the Quiz grades: 82 + 85 + 93 + 78 = 338/4 = 84.5
  • Average the Discussion grades: 88 + 76 + 88 + 70 + 91 + 88 + 92 + 65 = 658/8 = 82.3
  • Average the Reading Log / Discussions / Participation (10 total) = 80 + 100 + 100 + 70 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 70 + 100 + 100 = 920/10 = 92

 

• Then multiply by the percentage:
  • 84.5 X .10 = 8.5 (Quizzes)
  • 82.3 X .25 = 20.5 (Discussions)
  • 92 X .20 = 18.4 (Reading Logs / Discussions / Participation)
  • 100 X .10 = 10 (Service-Learning Project)
  • 85 X .20 = 17 (Self-Directed Learning Project)
  • 83 X .15 = 12.5 (Final Exam)

 

• Now, add the numbers for each category: 
  • 8.5 + 20.5 + 18.4 + 10 + 17 + 12.5 = 86.9 = B (Course Grade)

LATE WORK

Late work is accepted up to one week after a due date has passed. Students can earn up to 85% of the overall grade within the week after the due date. NO work is accepted more than one week after a due date.

Attendance

• Attendance is taken daily.
• Students should attend class daily. Role will additionally be taken through in-class participation and graded assignments given at the instructor’s discretion.
• Updates and assignments are subject to change at the instructor’s discretion and should be monitored daily online.

Additional Information

During class the use of personal cell phones is prohibited unless specified by the instructor. Laptops/tables are allowed for note taking purposes only. ALL technological use should be limited to course related content. No photo imaging is allowed at any point throughout the entirety of the course. The instructor may limit technology at various points due to improper usage.
