Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) One 30-minute lesson per week, minimum three hours of outside practice per week required. Emphasis on basic technique and musicianship, with appropriate literature tailored to the needs/desires of the individual student.

On Campus Course
Music appropriate to the level of the particular student will be assigned at the first lesson or as needed throughout the semester.
Assignment notebook (spiral or 3 ring binder of any size)
Music as assigned by instructor – sheet music must be obtained for any study piece.
After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will demonstrate improvement in technical playingl skills, sight reading skills, memory skills and musicality. The student will be able to perform assigned literature demonstrating correct posture, rhythm, note accuracy, and intonation, as evaluated by the applied instructor.

Students are expected to practice at least 30 minutes per day, for a total of 3 to 5 hours weekly, attend class and bring materials weekly.
Students will be given a letter grade each week based on their performance and improvement from the previous week. The letter grades will be averaged to determine the final grade.
Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. In case of absence, the student must contact the instructor prior to the scheduled lesson time to set up a makeup lesson time, at the instructor's discretion. One unexcused absence will be allowed, without affecting final grade. The second unexcused absence will be recorded as an "F" in the gradebook. Three unexcused absences will result in an "F" for the final grade.
The student should contact the instructor prior to the first week of the semester to determine the time for the weekly lesson. This can be done by filling out and leaving a schedule sheet for Mrs. Nies at MB308 or e-mailing Mrs. Nies through the link at top of this syllabus.
First lesson: Meet with instructor; determine individual goals for semester, choose textbook/music, and receive first practice assignment.
2ndlesson: Prepare the given assignment, and bring all required materials to lesson.
3rdand subsequent lessons: Each upcoming week’s assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week’s lesson.
Final lesson, given during last week of the semester: Several pieces learned throughout the semester, plus appropriate technical exercises such as studied etudes will be performed for the instructor.
Practice rooms are available, located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice when not in use by college faculty.
