Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Expected Student Behavior

1. Please make every effort to be on time.  Late arrivals are very disrupting to the class and to a proper learning environment.
2. Exams will open at the scheduled start time for the class.  Those arriving late may begin the exam when they arrive, but will have the same completion deadline as everyone else in the class.
3. Cell phones must be put away during class and either turned off or in vibrate mode. If a cell phone that rings during a major exam, a 10% score deduction will be implemented when the exam is graded.
4. Students who decide a call on their cell phone is important enough to take during class must leave the room.
5. Other behavior deemed as being disruptive or disrespectuful by the instructor may lead to the student(s) being asked to leave the classroom. If this happens, the student(s) will not be allowed to return until after a counseling session with the Program Director.
6. Cheating on exams or copying the work of others on assignments will result in a grade of 0 for the exam or assignment and will severely jeopardize successful completion of this course and continued enrollment in the program (see AC RC Student Handbook).
7. Food and drinks are allowed in class as long as you clean up your area before you leave and dispose of all trash.
8. In the event that AC moves to virtual courses due to Covid-19, it will be a requirement that webcams be on at all times during class.  Failure to turn on or leave on a webcam will result in an absence for that scheduled class time.

Grading Criteria

1. Course grading will consist of:
   • Exams/quizzes
   • Assignments (25 pts each)
   • Project (100 pts)
   • Research paper (100 pts)
   • Oral Case Study (100pts)
2. Examinations will have a specific value of points awarded for correct answers.  Exams will be administered using Respondus Lockdown Browser to ensure exam integrity.
3. Total possible course points may change as assignments are added throughout the semester.  At the end of the course all possible points from examinations and all course work will be totaled.  This total will be the maximum possible points a student could earn.
4. The number of points earned by a student will be divided by the maximum possible points for the course. The quotient will be expressed as a percent and converted to a final grade. The grading scale for this course is:
   A = 90 - 100%
   B = 80 - 89%
   C = 75 - 79%
   F = < 75%
5. Makeup examinations may be given, but the maximum score on makeup exams is 75%, no makeup is available for quizzes.  Research papers, oral case studies and projects will not be accepted after the announced deadline.

Remediation Policy

Mandatory tutoring in the West Campus Student Success Center (WCB Building) will be required when a test is failed. The student will receive a "prescription" for tutoring from the instructor that must be completed by the tutoring center when tutoring is complete. The student must complete the prescribed tutoring to be eligible to take the next exam.

The instructor will meet with students who do not pass exams.  Both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered on the test.  The plan may include but not be limited to:

1. research of exam topics
2. written discussion of topics
3. oral discussion of topics

Mandatory remediation sessions will be a group event at a date/time set by the instructor.  Failure to arrive on time and complete remediation at the set date/time will result in negative (-10) points.

The last date to withdraw from this class is November 21, 2023.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend.  Please notify me by email if you will not be attending class.  Excessive absences will be handled on an individual basis and will require a counseling session.  Following this session, a departmental counseling form will be placed in the student's file.  The purpose of this form is to document that the student was made aware that excessive absences were jeopardizing successful course completion.

Any time a class is missed, it is the student's responsibility to obtain notes from classmates.  The instructor will be happy to discuss any information from the class, but the instructor's lecture notes are not available for copying.

If a student is having a problem with course policy or the course instructor, he or she should first try to resolve the problem with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Respiratory Care Program Director (Becky Byrd), the Dean of Health Professions (Kim Boyd)/Division Committee, IN THAT ORDER.
