Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Application of communication theory to interpersonal relationship development, maintenance and termination in relationship contexts including friendships, romantic partners, families and relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

Textbooks

Interpersonal Messages, 4th edition by Joseph Devito. This is an ONLINE textbook and will require a specific code/link to access our course. There is a 14-day free trial you can sign up for until your book arrives.

Student Performance

Through reading the current literature, researching recent communication findings, and participating in group and individual oral assignments, the student will:

1.   Define and explain basic communication terms and principles which undergird competent communication in personal, social, and professional settings.

2.   Analyze various communication contexts.

3.   Understand the process of perception and the part perception plays in communicating with others.

4.   Improve listening skills.

5.   Understand the process of intercultural communication.

6.   Apply communication principles and theory in diverse circumstances and demonstrate effective communication, distinguishing effective from less effective responses.

7.   Become aware of the stages of relational development and deterioration.

8.   Describe the influence of both verbal and nonverbal messages in communication.

9.   Demonstrate the use of appropriate citations for all reference work used in papers and presentations.

10. Participate in class and group processes.

11. Demonstrate courtesy and respect for classmates.

Confidentiality


Many communication courses ask students to engage in a level of self-disclosure not usually characteristic of other courses. Different people will feel comfortable with varying levels of self-disclosure. While I would like you to draw from your personal experience, you may choose to talk about yourself or someone you know. If it is the latter, in the interest of confidentially they should remain nameless. Interpersonal Communication is an interactive course, meaning you will be learning from each other’s personal experiences and examples. For this reason, it is encouraged for you to be open to sharing with the class. Additionally, because some individuals will be sharing personal stories, I expect there to be a level of confidentiality among the members of the class and respect for their classmates' privacy.

Quizzes (6 Total / 5 Graded)

Course Quizzes are separate from Revel quizzes. Quizzes will be utilized in this course to check for understanding and engagement with course material. Quizzes are open-book, but you will have trouble answering the questions in the allotted amount of time if you have not at least skimmed the chapter. The quizzes will be made up of multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions.

 

I drop your lowest quiz grade at the end of the semester. 

30 points each x 5 Quizzes = 150 points total 

Assignments/Revel Work (8 Total) 

During week one, students will be assigned to complete the contact information and syllabus agreement worksheet. 

 

As students engage with the online textbook, they will be expected to complete Revel Quizzes/Assignments for each chapter assigned. 

25 points each x 8 Assignments = 200 points total

Discussions - Coffee Talks (5 Total) 

In order to assist students as they engage critically with the course text and to refine research and peer-to-peer discussion skills, students will complete discussions or “Coffee Talks” over 6 chapters of our textbook.

 

NOTE: I do not require a specific number of responses for discussion. I do require at least one, as anything less than that would not be a discussion. Instead, I grade based on the quality of your responses to each other. Quality is preferred over quantity!

30 points each x 5 Discussions = 150 points total 

The Way We See Me Essay 

 

Students will write a 2-3 page essay that analyzes their self-concept/self-awareness/self-esteem by examining answers the student and two people in the student’s life give on a list of personality traits (see Week 2 for more information). 

 

100 Points Total 

Midterm Checkpoint Discussion

Students will complete a brief discussion post detailing their progress throughout the course, any noticeable changes to their interpersonal communication, and their favorite topics reviewed thus far. 

50 Points Total 

Love Lyrics Presentation 

For this project, students will compile a list of love songs representing love types and relationship stages. This will require students to analyze the lyrics to songs and relate the meaning of the song to the Love Types and Relationship Stages discussed in class. This assignment will require a PowerPoint or Google Slide presentation (See week 4 for more information).

100 points total 

Final Paper (Skills Analysis Paper)

For this final assignment, students are to write a synopsis or review of what they have learned about their own interpersonal communication skills and knowledge drawing upon the specific skills and concepts discussed throughout the term (see the Final Project tab for more information).

250 points total

Attendance

Attendance: Regular attendance is essential for satisfactory achievement. Your participation in discussions and assignments will directly affect your grade. Attendance will be based on your successful submission of assignments each week by the published due date and the use of login reports if needed.

  • Purchase your textbook (will be bundled with online Revel code and text)
  •  Sign up through the ‘Pearson Revel’ tab in our course so you can start this week’s coursework

  • Read Chapter One: Foundations of Interpersonal Communication and complete Revel bookwork

  • Read the Paper #1 Assignment that will be due in week 3 
  • This assignment requires you to have two other people complete worksheets about you before you type the paper, so leave yourself plenty of time to give them the worksheets, and get them back in time to analyze them for the paper.

Additional Information

Notes about Communication: 

  • I will communicate with you via your student email account. If you email me from a personal email account, I may not receive it due to the updated security firewalls our IT department has put in place. Please check your student email account regularly!
  • I will do my best to respond to emails within 24 hours. I may take longer to respond on weekends. I will use Blackboard and email to send reminders and updates. If you have a grade-related question or one that requires a longer conversation, please make an appointment to meet virtually with me.
