The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Expected Student Behavior

Confidentiality
Many communication courses ask students to engage in a level of self-disclosure not usually characteristic of other courses. Different people will feel comfortable with varying levels of self-disclosure. While I would like you to draw from your personal experience, you may choose to talk about yourself or someone you know. If it is the latter, in the interest of confidentially they should remain nameless. Interpersonal Communication is an interactive course, meaning you will be learning from each other’s personal experiences and examples. For this reason it is encouraged for you to be open to sharing with the class. Additionally, because some individuals will be sharing personal stories, I expect there to be a level of confidentiality among the members of the class and respect for their classmates' privacy.

Participation Activities:
This class relies upon two major things 1) your active participation in online discussions and class exercises and 2) a close, meaningful analysis of your own communication tendencies with family, friends, co-workers and people you meet. If these things occur along with attention to assignments and class readings you will find tools to better understand your own communication skills, relate better with others and succeed in this course.

You are required to find a non profit organization to volunteer at least one time (3 hours). You will be writing your final paper over your volunteering experience. This is worth 20% of your grade. Think about where you would like to volunteer and seek out information on the hours and days they will need volunteers. Find an organization that works with your schedule.

Late Work Policy:

I do not accept late work. Assignments are due Sunday nights at midnight each week. It is your responsibility to manage your time and meet the deadlines. I do not make exceptions to the late work policy. I do not reset quizzes. Two of the lowest quiz grades are dropped, and this is to help you out when there are technical difficulties, etc. and they will not count against you.

Regular attendance is essential for satisfactory achievement. Attendance for this course means logging in several times per week and engaging in discussions and Revel bookwork.

Additional Information

I will check emails several times a week, and will stay off my computer on the weekends (Fri-Sun) to take a break and get outside. I suggest you take a couple of days off from schoolwork as well, to refresh and recharge mentally and physically. if you want to set up an online video chat or come to my office and meet on campus you can. I am happy to meet at a time that works for you, day or night. Just ask and we can set something up. Email/course message is the fastest way to communicate with me. Please give me 1-2 days to respond.

There is a final service learning project that will require you to spend a minimum of three hours, or one visit volunteering over the course of the 8 week semester. You will be applying what you learn in the course to your volunteering experience. For this reason, it is recommended that you decide where you want to volunteer within the first week of class, including contacting the organization and finding out when you can volunteer/hours/requirements, etc. Then, I recommend you do the actual volunteering around weeks 4-6. This will give you plenty of time to absorb the theories, terms, and concepts you will learn about through the course, so you can observe them as you are volunteering, then write about them in the final paper in week 7.

Several students last semester waited until the last minute to volunteer, and ended up at the High Plains Food Bank. The food bank is a very worthy organization, but based on past projects it didn’t really fit well with the goal of the project. Students were often stacking cans by themselves in a corner. It would be best for you to be interacting with people for this project. It is an Interpersonal Communication course after all! Pick something you feel passionate about, or at least something you are interested in. This will be more beneficial to you personally as well as for your project.

Examples: If you plan to be a teacher, volunteer at a school.

If you plan to be a nurse, volunteer at a hospital or nursing home.

If you love animals, volunteer at the humane society.

If you aren’t sure what you want to do for a career, step out of your comfort zone and try something new...you may find your passion in this process! You must be a volunteer only, meaning you cannot your use your place of employment, where you are getting paid to complete your 3 hours of service learning.

This is also a great opportunity to make some connections in the community that will help you with a future career. Volunteer form must be signed by a supervisor and turned in. Volunteer hours may be verified by me or the speech department assistant.

This course requires that you write several papers, and requires me to read all of your papers and give feedback. I often am teaching up to 130 students in one semester, and it takes a while to grade all of those thoroughly. While I will often have them graded within a week of the due date, please know that it can take up to two weeks at times, depending on other circumstances. I appreciate your patience. Professor Orcutt
