Steven G. Smith, vice president of business affairs at Amarillo College, has been selected to attend the prestigious Governor’s Executive Development Program.
The three-week intensive educational program is administered for the Texas Governor’s Office by the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University Texas at Austin.
The program is conducted annually and is designed for top executives – from state agencies and higher education – who have responsibility for charting the strategic direction of their organizations.
Smith, who joined the AC administration this past spring, is charged with leading all business and business-related functions of the College and developing new and alternate funding sources. He is responsible for all reporting functions to local, state, and national agencies on fiscal affairs.
He was nominated for the Governor’s Program by AC President Russell Lowery-Hart.
“I am honored and excited to have been nominated by Dr. Lowery-Hart and to be selected by the Governor’s Office to be a part of this great program,” Smith said.
“I look forward to the opportunity to enhance my leadership and management skills and to apply what I will learn to the day-to-day operations of Amarillo College. I am also very excited by the prospect of using the skills and concepts I acquire at this program to provide training and development to the current and future leaders of the College,” he said.
Faculty for the Governor’s Executive Development Program are drawn from throughout the nation. They include both university professors involved in research and teaching in management and organizational effectiveness as well as experienced practitioners from government and the private sector. Teaching methods include case studies, experiential exercises, lectures, and discussions.
Following an August orientation meeting in Austin, invitees will be scheduled to attend three multi-day meetings: Sept. 25-30 in Arlington; Oct. 30-Nov. 3 in Galveston; and Dec. 5-8 in Austin.
