Determination Process

You’ve Registered for Services, Now What?

 You have completed the following:

  1. Applied for services
  2. Provided correct documentation
  3. Participated in the intake meeting

So how will disability services make accommodation determinations?

  1. The staff member you met with for your intake will review the notes they took from your meeting, the documentation you submitted, and the accommodations you requested.
  2. They will summarize that information and make recommendations for the accommodations they think you may qualify for.
  3. The coordinator will review the information and recommendations provided by the intake staff, the documentation you submitted, the intake notes, and the accommodations you requested to make a final determination of accommodations.

You will receive a document called an “Approval/Denial”. This document will state the accommodations you requested, the accommodations that have been approved, and, if any, the accommodations that have been denied. If your accommodation is denied, you will receive a reason for the denial and a suggestion or alternative proposal to meet the need you identified.

The Approval/Denial is for your records. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this document, you are encouraged to contact Disability Services for clarification.

Accommodation Plan

After you have received your Approval/Denial, you will receive your first Accommodation Plan. Accommodations are accessed through AC Connect Self Service portal, under AC Forms — Disability Services—Application for Services and Accommodations.

The accommodations will be split into two sections: (1) Testing Accommodations and (2) Classroom Accommodations. The term they have been issued for will be listed (example: 2024FA for 2024 Fall).

Once you receive your Accommodation Plan, you will need to send this to each of your instructors in order to receive accommodations in those classes.

*Note: It is important to note that you will not begin to receive accommodations until they are sent to your instructor(s). Accommodations are not retroactive.

If you disagree with the accommodation decision and desire to appeal the decision, the appeal should be made in the following order:

  1. Coordinator of Disability Services – The student will contact the Coordinator to discuss the grievance with the objective of arriving at a satisfactory resolution of the complaint.
  2. Vice President of Student Affairs – If the complaint is still not resolved, the student may submit a written appeal within 5 business days to the Vice President, who will investigate the complaint and render a written decision within 10 business days.
  3. College President – If the complaint is still not resolved, the student may submit a written appeal within 5 business days to the College President, who will render a written decision within 10 business days.

Students have the right to file a complaint with the (United States Department of Education) Office for Civil Rights at any point in this process. Please visit the following website to learn more about the Office for Civil Rights.
