Fundamentals of Photography I (ARTS 2356) is the first step for photo majors and is an approved Creative Arts elective for the core curriculum in many programs. Please check with your program advisor.
The course requires students to have their own digital camera. Consumer digital cameras are allowed if at least 10 megapixels in resolution, have some exposure control, and have a zoom lens. Digital SLR's are recommended to get the most from the course. The program does not provide cameras.
It is highly recommended for photo majors to have a DSLR. A DSLR has the ability to use manual exposure adjustments and has the ability to change lenses.
During the course we will also cover using film and darkroom techniques. Film cameras are not required.
Supplies for the course will include ink cartridges and paper for the program's printers for student use. The supply list will be provided on the first class meeting day. Expect to spend $50-$80 for supplies.
Ink and paper supplies are available in the Washington Campus Bookstore. It is also possible to order a digital SLR camera through the bookstore, primarily for those on financial aid. These cameras will function well for the photography program, but realize there are many camera options available, with different feature sets. Be sure to do your research on cameras before purchasing. Dpreview provides information on the latest cameras.
Here are some current (April 2014) cameras available. Each has different feature sets. They are in no particular order.
