A surgical technologist has a background of special education and practical experience enabling him/her to assume valuable functions in the operating room and ancillary areas of the hospital. Surgical technologists directly assist surgeons, anesthesia personnel, and registered nurses, increasing the performance and efficiency of the surgery department.

A student must be capable of lifting supplies and instrument trays, moving heavy equipment, and lifting and moving patients all while using the appropriate principles of good body mechanics. Physical stamina is required to be able to stand for long periods of time, and the student must be able to work in a confined and stressful environment. Students must also possess adequate visual, hearing, and verbal communication skills.
Additionally, a student must be emotionally stable and have the ability to pay close attention to detail, be conscientious, and have good organizational abilities. Finally, students must be willing to continue their education throughout their career to keep current with regard to new developments in the field.
Due to the physical constraints of the profession, persons who are applying for entry into the surgical technology educational program at Amarillo College must submit a health record certifiying these abilities.

Completion of the twelve-month surgical technology program entitles the graduate to a "Certificate of Completion in Surgical Technology." The graduate is then eligible to take the national certification examination given by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (LCCST).
