The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) may deny licensure to an applicant who fails to demonstrate good professional character or who demonstrates lack of fitness to practice in regard to mental illness or addiction to alcohol or drugs. All applicants for initial nursing licensure, both RN and LVN, in the state of Texas are subject to an FBI-level criminal background check at the time of application.
The BON maintains a process whereby individuals with a criminal record, a history of disciplinary action, a history of mental illness, and treatment and/or addiction to alcohol or drugs may petition to the BON to make decisions about eligibility for licensure prior to entering or completing a nursing program. This process entails petitioning the BON for a Declaratory Order of Eligibility for Licensure. The petition and instructions to complete the process can be found on the BON Web Site or the BON may be contacted at (512) 305-6838 for additional information.
All nursing students are required to carry professional liability insurance. Fees are collected at the time of registration to cover the cost of a blanket college student policy with a major insurance carrier.
HESI Assessment is valid for one calendar year. Students may only take the HESI one time during an application period.
