Amarillo College is gratified to announce the acquisition of a $3 million gift that will significantly alter AC’s footprint in Hereford.
The gift was given by William C. Hanshaw of Scottsdale, Ariz., for the purpose of constructing a new AC campus in Hereford that will be christened The Everett and Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus of Amarillo College—after those whom Hanshaw cherishes most.
Hanshaw’s benevolence precipitated a second gift to AC, this one a 10-acre plot of undeveloped land on 15th Street in northwest Hereford courtesy of the Hereford Economic Development Corporation.
The new campus there will cost about $5 million in all, and AC plans to commit the additional $2 million to the project through a variety of sources.
It could open as early as fall 2013, supplanting AC’s present-day, spatially challenged Hereford Campus, which has been housed in a wing of an old elementary school since 2005.
The Hinksons were more than Hanshaw’s dearest friends; he married Mabel McDougal Hinkson, a longtime Hereford resident, 14 years after Everett Hinkson passed away, and they remained husband and wife until she died in 2001. She is buried in Hereford.
Hanshaw is a retired educator and rancher. He spent several years teaching in Panama. Later he taught school in St. Johns, Ariz.
“It is with profound gratitude that Amarillo College humbly accepts Mr. Hanshaw’s overwhelming gift and accedes to his wishes for naming our new campus,” AC President Paul Matney said. “Our appreciation, while vast, probably never will match the enormity of Mr. Hanshaw’s selfless heart.
“The Everett and Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus will be a wonderful tribute to the loved ones in Mr. Hanshaw’s life and an amazing asset for the students Amarillo College serves in Hereford. A new campus in Hereford has been our dream for a long time, and we’re greatly indebted to Mr. Hanshaw and to the Hereford Economic Development Corporation for helping to make it a reality.”
AC’s Hereford Campus has needed additional space for some time. It opened in 2005 with about 100 students, but this year the campus is serving 267 academic students, 120 more in the continuing education and workforce development sectors, and 110 dual credit students.
“These 497 students are the most we’ve ever served in one semester,” Daniel Esquivel, executive director of the Hereford Campus, said. “I hesitate to use the word ‘desperate,’ but we’ve run out of options for the classes we can offer.”
Nearly 70 percent of AC Hereford’s students are pursuing careers in allied health industries, yet the campus has no true science labs, a necessary component in such degrees. That forces many students to commute to Amarillo’s AC campuses, said Esquivel, who also notes a lack of office space, storage space, and even a student lounge at his present location.
“We’ve greatly appreciated the space we’ve leased from Hereford ISD all these years; however, what lies ahead is not only a much-needed expansion, it’s a true college atmosphere, a definitive college experience that we’ve sorely been lacking and can soon offer our students,” Esquivel said.
The Everett and Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus of Amarillo College also will be a boon to the city of Hereford, where tough economic times have been exacerbated by the drought.
“This new campus will be a wonderful addition for our city,” Hereford Mayor Bob Josserand said. “Not only will it allow for more hometown participation in higher education for students in our community, it’s a real morale-builder for our citizens.
“Our farmers and ranchers have not had a positive year and are looking at a tough winter,” he said. “This is the kind of economic boost that can lift an entire community. This is fantastic news for Hereford on a lot of levels. We can’t wait to get started.”
The Board of Regents approved Lavin & Associates as the architectural firm to design the Everett and Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus in Hereford.
Amarillo College broke ground for its much-anticipated, $5 million Hereford Campus on Friday, Aug. 31.
The ceremony to launch construction of the Everett & Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus drew a large and enthusiastic crowd.
The official address of the new campus will be 1115 W. 15th St., southwest of the new hospital.
“It’s very exciting to be part of the growth that’s happening in northwest Hereford,” Daniel Esquivel, executive director of the Hereford Campus, said.
“Our community is thrilled because this new location will finally give the College a traditional presence, something the people of Hereford can identify with and call their own.”
AC opened its Hereford Campus in 2005 in a wing of an old elementary school and remains there today, but enrollments have long since stretched the facility beyond its limits. AC’s Hereford Campus served 504 students last fall.
Funding for a new campus had long been on the wish lists of both the College and city of Hereford when, in 2011, William C. Hanshaw of Scottsdale, Ariz., paid an unexpected call on AC President Paul Matney.
Hanshaw’s unsolicited donation of $3 million to build a campus in Hereford was accompanied by a request that it be named in memory of his loved ones. AC happily agreed and is contributing an additional $2 million to make the new campus a reality.
The 30,000-square-foot building will take about 16 months to complete and will sit on 10 acres of land donated last year by the Hereford Economic Development Corporation. AC has since purchased an adjacent 10-acre tract at a cost of $200,000 to accommodate future expansion.
“The Everett and Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus will be a wonderful tribute to the loved ones in Mr. Hanshaw’s life and an amazing asset for the students of Amarillo College,” Matney said. “A new campus in Hereford has been our dream for a long time, and we’re greatly indebted to Mr. Hanshaw and to the Hereford Economic Development Corporation for helping make it a reality.”
