Dental Hygiene Specific Application Information

Apply for General Admission to AC

Submit your application online 

  Apply to Amarillo College for general admission.

Official Transcripts

  • If you’ve attended other colleges, send official transcripts to the AC Registrar’s Office: Transfer Information.
    • If AC is your only college, this step is not required.
    • Courses marked as "in progress" at the time of application will not count towards your points.
    • If necessary, request a transcript evaluation through the Registrar’s Office.

Courses That Must Be Completed Before Applying

All applicants must complete the following prerequisite courses before submitting an application to the Dental Hygiene Program:

  • BIOL 2401 Anatomy and Physiology I
  • BIOL 2402 Anatomy and Physiology II
  • BIOL 2420 Microbiology for Non-Science Majors
  • CHEM 1405 Introductory Chemistry I
    (or an approved equivalent listed on the degree plan)

Additional Required Course

  • HITT 1205 Medical Terminology I
    • Medical Terminology is required but does not earn admission points.
    • Medical Terminology must be completed no later than August 24, 2026.

Admission Scoring Information

  • Admission to the program is competitive. High grades are strongly recommended.
  • Admission points are awarded only for the four science prerequisite courses listed above.
  • Medical Terminology is not included in admission point calculations.

Course Repeat Policy

  • Each prerequisite course may be repeated one time only.
  • If a course is repeated, the highest grade earned will be used in the admission scoring process.

Required Observation Hours

Applicants must complete required dental hygiene observation hours before submitting an application.

  • Complete two full-day dental hygiene observations (minimum of 16 total hours, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.)
    • All observation hours may be completed at a single dental office; multiple offices are not required.
  • Completion of observation hours earns 2 additional admission points.
  • Applicants must follow the official Observation Instructions and use the required Verification Form.

Submission Requirements

  • The completed Observation Verification Form must be scanned and emailed before the application deadline.

  • Observation hours are valid for one year.
  • Observation hours cannot be completed in an office where the applicant is employed.

Note: The dental offices listed are provided as recommended options for completing observation hours. Observation hours may also be fulfilled at other dental offices that align with the program’s requirements.

Mandatory Information Sessions

  • Attend an information session (on-campus or virtual) to learn about the application process and the required TEAS Exam.

Dental Hygiene Program Information Session

  • Attendance counts toward your application score. You’ll earn 1 application point just for attending.
  • Admission is very competitive, so attending is strongly recommended.
  • At the session, you’ll learn what the program is really like, including:
    • Program expectations
    • Time commitment
    • Fees and required expenses
    • What it takes to be successful in the program

Upcoming Dental Hygiene Information Session Dates

All sessions are held from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Amarillo College, West Campus Jones Hall, 1st Floor, Room 136 (Dental Lab) in the Dental Hygiene Department.

*Note: When you arrive, go to the Dental Clinic waiting room, and we will direct you to the meeting room. Showing up matters. If you’re serious about applying, this is an easy point you don’t want to miss.

Register/Take the TEAS

TEAS testing can be taken through Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI), or in person. Learn more information about TEAS Exam.

  • TEAS Testing Starts February 5, 2026.
  • Last TEAS Exam date is April 13, 2026.

All Health Sciences programs use the TEAS exam to rank applicants and determine eligibility for admission. Only TEAS scores from exams taken within 12 months of the application deadline will be accepted. Prepare for the TEAS Exam

 Check Your Amarillo College Email

  • After submitting your Health Science Application, check your Amarillo College email for instructions on completing the application process.
  • Application deadline: April 10, 2026, by 3:00 p.m.

Review Your Admission Points

  • After the application deadline of April 10, 2026, you will receive an email from the Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee.
  • The email will include your Program Point System Worksheet showing how your application was scored.

What You Need to Do

  • Review your worksheet carefully.
  • If everything is correct, reply to the email to confirm, or respond with any necessary corrections. 
  • You must respond by Noon on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

Failure to respond by the deadline may affect your admission status.

CASPER Assessment

  • If selected, you will need to complete the CASPER Assessment on 
    • Tuesday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m.
      or
    • Saturday, May 23, at 12:00 p.m.

Final Decision

  • CASPER scores will be sent to AC in two weeks.
  • You will receive an email with your acceptance status on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
  • Accepted students must confirm their acceptance by Friday, June 12, 2026.
