Amarillo College has been involved in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Education since the inception of the industry. The Department of Paramedicine Technology was created in January of 1984. The program has evolved over the years to what it is today; The Department of Emergency Medical Services Professions. The advanced components of the curriculum were dramatically revised and the revisions were implemented in January of 1993 and again in January 2023.
Thank you for your interest in the Emergency Medical Services Professions Program at Amarillo College. The program offers academic and continuing education curricula designed for people who desire to work in the field of emergency medicine. Our students range from initial certification students, seeking to prepare themselves for that first ambulance ride, to seasoned veterans of ground and flight services; hospital emergency departments and critical care units; and physicians offices and clinics seeking continuing education.
The advanced program (EMSP.CERT) leading to a paramedic certificate is a 1-year, hybrid designed, 1300 hour program. The program currently graduates around 10-20 Paramedics annually from our on-campus program. AEMT courses are also available in conjunction with the paramedic program. All advanced courses are open only to accepted applicants, filled on a competitive admission process.
Off-campus, non-paramedic, course offerings are delivered as requested by area communities and EMS Services in the Amarillo College service area. Basic classes are open admission.
For those desiring an Associate Degree in Paramedicine (EMSP.AAS), the program is designed so that students can continue their progression through the general education requirements for the degree and seek paramedic employment after obtaining State certification as a Paramedic.
The Amarillo College EMSP program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions.
