Admission to the A.A.S. and Paramedic Certificate Classes
- The applicant must hold current certification as a Texas EMT or National Registry EMT and maintain that certification throughout their EMSP curriculum.
- The applicant must have earned a high-school diploma or a GED certificate and satisfy the general admission requirements to Amarillo College.
- The applicant must complete and submit an application portfolio no later than Oct 15, prior to the coming January semester, that will include:
- A completed EMSP application form.
- Copies of High School and College transcripts.
- Documentation of high school and college honors (if any)
- Copies of National Registry EMT (or AEMT), or State EMT (or AEMT), certifications
- Proof of compliance with the following immunization requirements:
In order to maintain compliance with Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, rule §97.64 all immunization requirements must be met prior to any patient contact in the clinical setting. These immunizations include:
- Tetanus-diphtheria within 10 years
- Measles (two doses) (preferably MMR vaccine)
- Mumps (preferably MMR vaccine)
- Rubella (preferably MMR vaccine)
- Hepatitis-B Immunization (3-injection series requiring 4-6 months for completion)
- Varicella (chicken pox)
- Influenza (if your clinical rotations occur during flu season: October to May)
- In addition, proof of a negative Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test (within the last year) is required.
- The applicant must have completed the TSI or TSI equivalent. Call 806-371-5445 for information.
If the applicant is required to complete any remediation as a result of the TSI, applicant cannot be considered for admission until remediation schedule is complete.
- The applicant must have a personal interview with a full-time EMSP faculty member.
- The applicant must earn sufficient admission points to be placed on the class roster.
- The student is required to complete a criminal background check prior to reporting to clinical. The criminal background check is required by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital organizations (JCAHO) and based on JCAHO Standard H.R. 1.20. The student will be required to submit your name and social security number to preCheck, INC. and a fee for the report payable to preCheck, INC. at the time of the application. If any information regarding your past legal history that is unacceptable by the Hospitals according to JCAHO Standard H.R. 1.20, you will be denied permission to continue in the course and will forfeit any tuition and fees previously paid to Amarillo College.
- The applicant must be able to fully participate in all clinical activities in such a way as to not pose a risk to the safety of themselves, the patient, or clinical personnel. A medical physical exam may be required.
- Students WILL NOT be cleared to take the National, or State, certifying exam until all listed EMSP.CERT courses are successfully completed.
