Not majoring in music?

 

The Amarillo College Department of Music welcomes the general student to its classes and studios. MUSI-1306 Music Appreciation is designed specifically for non-music majors and fulfills the Creative Arts Core requirement. Performance instruction and most ensembles are available to non-music majors for academic elective credit or through continuing education and to members of the general community.

Scholarships are available by audition for non-music majors to enroll in private lessons and ensembles.

Private lessons

Private lessons focus on the art and practice of an instrument or voice, with emphasis on tone quality, technique, rhythm, interpretation, and literature. Additional course fees are charged for these classes; see General Fees - Music at http://catalog.actx.edu/content.php?catoid=19&navoid=866

To register, go to the Academic Schedule of Classes (https://selfservice.actx.edu/Student/courses/), search for course subject MUAP and click on the MUAP-Applied Music link. Scroll through available sections or search for a specific instrument in the upper right "Search for Courses" bar. Non-music majors should select a one-hour credit elective (30 minute lesson) or two-hour credit elective (60 minute lesson) section. Students and advisors may also contact the Music Office at 371-5340 for assistance in registering for private lessons.

Placement is subject to availability and other departmental factors.

 

Group instruction

Group instruction is designed for beginners and emphasizes basic technique, rhythm, tone and musical interpretation. Each class is only one credit hour. Available courses are: MUSI-1181/1182 Piano Class I and II, and MUSI-1192 Guitar Class.

Ensembles

The opportunity to perform music collectively is celebrated at Amarillo College, whether you're an undergraduate performance major, a precollege or adult student, or a member of the larger Texas Panhandle community.
