Before You Apply to Any Health Program:

Prospective students must first Apply to Amarillo College before they can be considered for admission to any of the Health Sciences Programs. Your first contact after being accepted to AC should be with your Health Services Advisor, Anna Stewart for Nursing or Amanda Mckee for Health Sciences.

Your next contact should be with the Director of the Program or programs you select. Each Health Sciences Program has a designated faculty member who manages the program and serves as the program's primary faculty advisor. If a Program Director is not immediately available, please contact the division's Executive Secretary.

You must be an active Amarillo College Student to apply for any health science program.

If you have not taken a course with Amarillo College in the last 12 months, you are no longer considered an active student, and you must reapply to the college.

Complete Admission

  1. Apply to Amarillo College for general admission.
    1. Submit all official college transcripts from other institutions to the Registrar's Office. (If AC is the only college you have attended, this step does not need to be completed.)
*Note: All students transferring course work to Amarillo College must complete the college admission process, including evaluation of all official transcripts by the Registrar’s Office, if necessary, before scheduling an Advising Session appointment with the Health Sciences or Nursing Advisor.

    2. Complete any Placement Testing (Unless Exempt - Review exemptions: Eligible ACT/SAT or Previous College)

  2. Set Up Your AC Connect Account (once accepted)

  3. Provide Proof of Bacterial Meningitis (Only students under the age of 22)

If you took a CNA course anywhere other than Amarillo College, you must submit proof of CNA course completion to Ashley Ruiz if you are applying to either the ADN program or the LVN program.

If you would like to pursue one or more of the Health Sciences careers at Amarillo College, you will need to make a special application to the Health Sciences Division in addition to the general application to Amarillo College. Please note that enrollment in each program is limited, due to limited training space in the regional affiliate facilities, so an early application is strongly recommended.

Additionally, each program has a very specific set of criteria used to select each group of new students. Therefore, it is vitally important to become familiar with the selection criteria as soon as possible so that you can plan ahead. Likewise, it is also important to make early personal contact with the Program Director to ensure that you understand the application and selection process and to establish a file in your name.

If you would like to get help in choosing a career, visit the Career and Employment Services page and take the YouScience Career Assessment.

If you would like to tour Amarillo College, visit the Tours page to schedule a visit.

Before you apply to a Health Science program, you must meet with the advisor and verify that you have completed the prerequisites that are required before you can be accepted into a program.

 Once Accepted

Once you have been accepted into a Health Science Programs require students: immunizations, criminal background checks, drug screening, and HIPAA training. You can view the Complio step-by-step guide for information and instructions before going on visiting the AC Complio website that provides an all-in-one compliance tracking program on one platform.

 State Requirements

The Nursing (ADN and LVN) are the only Health Services programs that have specific State Requirements. View the website for information.

Board of Nursing Clearance
Amarillo College cannot issue a Nursing license; only the Board of Nursing can issue you a license. In order for you to attend course clinicals and sit for the State Board of Nursing testing, you must first be cleared by the Texas Board of Nursing. To be cleared, you must complete a fingerprinting appointment and will go through an FBI-level background check. This process will start after you have been accepted into a Nursing Program. Further information about starting this process will be relayed upon acceptance.
If you have any offenses on your background, you may have to complete a "declaratory order" for the Board of Nursing. You may have to submit court documents involving the offense(s) for review; you also may have to complete other requirements from the Board of Nursing to be cleared for testing, and this could take 6 months or longer to obtain. If you are unable to secure clearance, you will have to drop your Nursing courses and cannot continue in the program until clearance has been secured.
If you have ever had any offenses, you can review the Texas Board of Nursing webpage to see if you may have an issue with your Licensure Eligibility. If you answer "yes" to any of the questions listed on the site, you may want to ready your court documents for submission and prepare to start a declaratory order.

Visit the Texas Board of Nursing website

Login through AC Connect and Register for the classes you and your Advisor approved you to take.

All incoming students are required to attend a program-specific orientation. The specific date, time, and location of the orientation will be given during the interview session.
